Generate shadow names for Mage: The Awakening, the assumed name a mage uses among the Awakened to guard the true one. The list runs from Hazard, Ossuary and Thunderhead to The Arbiter and Lady Thirteen, with styles for every Path and Order.

About Mage: the Awakening names

In Mage: The Awakening, a mage takes a shadow name after Awakening and uses it among other mages. The reason is practical: a true name is a sympathetic connection that makes magic cast from a distance easier, so the birth name is kept away from rivals. A shadow name is usually one evocative word or a short title, chosen by the mage, and it hints at their magic, their Order or their ambitions.

This list of 1,000 shadow names follows what a table asks for. For the five Paths there are Acanthus names of luck, time and thorns (Hazard, Mayfly, Eleventh Hour), Mastigos names of masks, mazes and inner demons (Legion, Scold, Panopticon), Moros names of death, stone and metal (Charon, Ossuary, Quicksilver), Obrimos names of angels, storm and fire (Thunderhead, Seraphine, Kindle) and Thyrsus names of beasts and herbs (Stag, Hyssop, Nightjar). For the Orders there are martial names for the Adamantine Arrow, faceless ones for the Guardians of the Veil, scholar names for the Mysterium, lofty titles for the Silver Ladder and modern handles for the Free Council.

The rest draws on figures of Greek, Celtic, Norse, Mesopotamian and Egyptian myth, stars, letters and numbers, Latin words, alchemy and old trades. The styles are mixed together, so every batch crosses Paths and Orders.

How to choose Mage: the Awakening names

  • Choose the name your character would pick, not a label for the sheet. A shadow name is self-chosen, so it shows how the mage wants to be seen: a Moros who dreads death might still call herself Evermore.
  • Say it out loud. The table will use the name every session, so one or two clear words work best, and a title such as The Arbiter will be shortened in play.
  • When Path and Order pull in different directions, let the Order decide the tone: Guardians of the Veil favor names that give nothing away (Nemo, Madame X), the Silver Ladder claims rank (Imperatrix, The Lawgiver) and the Free Council sounds current (Glitch, Dial Tone).
  • A name from myth brings its story along. Cassandra or Icarus tells every other mage what to expect, so pick a figure whose tale you want to echo or defy.
  • Storytellers can keep a short list by faction: titles of office such as Praetor, Viceroy or Autarch suit Seers of the Throne antagonists, and plain trade names suit a quiet local cabal.

Frequently asked questions

What is a shadow name in Mage: The Awakening?

It is the assumed name a mage uses in Awakened society in place of the name they were born with. A true name can serve as a sympathetic connection for spells cast from afar, so hiding it is self-defense as much as custom. Most shadow names are a single word or a short title, such as Aleph, Charon or Lady Thirteen.

Does a shadow name have to match my Path or Order?

No. Many players hint at the Path, with Thunderhead for an Obrimos or Hyssop for a Thyrsus, or at the Order, with Oathkeeper for the Adamantine Arrow or Marginalia for the Mysterium. A name that points the other way works too, and a mage who wants to hide what they can do has good reason to choose one.

Are these names taken from the published books?

Not as a set. This is an unofficial fan list written in the style of shadow names, drawn from myth, nature, crafts and symbols. Shadow names are ordinary words and figures of legend, so some names here are also carried by characters in the books, and a few terms from the setting appear as names too; none is marked as canon here, so ask your Storyteller if a name is already in use in your chronicle.

Can my mage use the name of a god or a hero?

Yes, borrowing from myth and legend is a common style for shadow names. The list includes figures such as Hecate, Daedalus, Gilgamesh and Thoth. A name that grand invites other mages to judge whether you live up to it, which is a good hook for a Silver Ladder claimant or a proud young apprentice.
