Lightning God Name Generator
Thunder, storm and lightning gods for any pantheon
Generate lightning god names for pantheons, novels and tabletop campaigns: attested thunder gods such as Zeus, Perun and Raijin, original deities like Voltareth the Sky-Splitter and Tharnok of the Anvil Clouds, and titles like Lord of the White Fork.
About lightning god names
Thunder gods tend to sit at the top of a pantheon or stand guard over it. Zeus and Jupiter rule as sky-fathers with a thunderbolt in hand, Thor defends gods and people with a hammer, and Perun and Perkunas are tied to the axe and the oak. Hadad and Teshub are storm gods of the ancient Near East, Indra wields the vajra, Raijin beats a ring of drums, and Chaac is a Maya rain god who strikes with a lightning axe. Summanus is the Roman god of thunder at night.
Fewer than one name in ten here is attested like these, given plainly with no added epithet. A few are close relatives rather than thunder gods proper: Steropes and Arges are Cyclopes who forged the thunderbolt of Zeus, and Astrape and Bronte personify lightning and thunder.
The rest are original, some built on old epithets and words for thunder, and run in styles: sky-fathers (Voltareth the Sky-Splitter), hammer and axe gods (Tharnok of the Anvil Clouds), rain-givers, war-thunderers, drum and voice gods, sea-storm gods, gods of oaths and sudden justice, lightning goddesses, storm-bird spirits, folk names such as Old Hammer-in-the-Cloud, single coined names like Brontavar, and bare titles like Lord of the White Fork. The bird names are plain English inventions and use no nation's sacred names.
How to choose lightning god names
- Decide what the god does with the storm before you pick. A sky-father suits Voltareth the Sky-Splitter, a smith-thunderer suits Tharnok of the Anvil Clouds, a kindly rain-giver suits The Voice Before Rain, and a god of oaths suits Horkion the Oath-Witness.
- Pair light with sound. Chinese tradition sets the thunder god Leigong beside the lightning goddess Dianmu, so a thunderer such as Tonarch the Deep-Voiced can travel with Astrapeia the Bright-Armed.
- Remember that some of these gods are worshipped today. Indra belongs to living Hinduism, and Shango and Oya to Yoruba religion and its diaspora. If the story needs a villain or a joke, an invented name such as Kharzul the Banner-Burner is the kinder choice.
- Give villagers a different name from the priests. The temple may say Ouranthor the High-Seated while farmers say Grandfather Rumble or Old Crack-the-Sky, and one god starts to feel like a whole culture.
- Say the name aloud before you commit. Ajisukitakahikone and Zibelthiurdos are real and look wonderful on the page, but Brontavar, Tonitron or Dunrik Hammerfall are easier to shout across a game table.
Frequently asked questions
Who are the real gods of lightning and thunder?
Well-known ones include Zeus in Greece, Jupiter in Rome, Thor in Norse myth, Perun among the Slavs, Indra in Hinduism, Raijin in Japan, Leigong in China, Shango in Yoruba religion and Illapa among the Inca. Hadad and Teshub are ancient Near Eastern storm gods, Ukko is the Finnish god of sky and thunder, and Chaac is the Maya rain god who carries a lightning axe. All of them are in the list under their plain names.
Are all of these names from mythology?
No, fewer than one in ten are. The rest, such as Brontavar, Dunrik Hammerfall and She Who Counts the Seconds, are original names. An invented name can still coincide with one used somewhere else, so search it before you publish.
What is a good lightning god name for D&D or a fantasy novel?
Pick by role. For a ruling sky god try Ouranthor the High-Seated or The Cloud-Gatherer, for a war god Zarvok, Thunder of the Vanguard, for a sailor's storm god Kymatron the Mast-Splitter, and for a folk deity Grandfather Rumble. A single coined name such as Keraunex or Tonitron works well when the god needs to sound older than the language of the people who worship it.
Are there lightning goddesses in the list?
Yes. Attested ones include Dianmu, the Chinese goddess of lightning, Whaitiri, a Maori goddess of thunder, Oya, the Yoruba orisha of winds and storms, and the Roman storm goddess Tempestas. Original goddesses include Astrapeia the Bright-Armed and Fulgurina of the Silver Needle, along with titles such as Queen of the Split Sky.
