About lighthouse names

Real lighthouses are almost never named for themselves. They take the name of the hazard or landmark they mark, followed by a role word: Cape Wrath Lighthouse, Bell Rock Light, Minot's Ledge Light, Ashtabula Pierhead Light. The middle word tells sailors what kind of danger it is. Head, Point and Cape mean a headland; Rock, Ledge, Reef, Shoal and Bar mean something at or under the waterline; Skerry is a Scottish or Norse sea rock; Pierhead, Breakwater and Range Light belong to harbors and the Great Lakes. American usage shortens to "Light," British and Irish lights are usually "Lighthouse" in full, and a staffed complex is a "Light Station."

The names that stick carry a story: Widow's Reef, Drowned Man's Reef, Execution Rocks, Wrecker's Ledge, Graves Ledge. Saints' names mark Cornish, Irish and Breton coasts; bird names (Gannet, Kittiwake, Puffin) mark seabird colonies; colors and rock types (Blackstone, Greystack, Ironbound) describe what the mariner sees. Elsewhere the role word comes first: Faro de Punta Gris, Phare de la Pointe Grise, Farol do Desterro, Leuchtturm Sturmkap, Fyr Gråskär.

How to choose lighthouse names

  • Name the hazard, not the building. Decide whether your light marks a headland (Head, Point, Cape), a submerged danger (Rock, Ledge, Reef, Shoal) or a harbor entrance (Pierhead, Breakwater), and the name will sound authentic.
  • Match the role word to the region: "Light" for New England and the Great Lakes, "Lighthouse" for Britain, Ireland and Australia, "Faro," "Phare," "Farol" or "Fyr" placed before the name for Spanish, French, Portuguese and Scandinavian coasts.
  • Give a lighthouse a nickname if it matters in the story. Real keepers and sailors rarely used the formal name; they said the Nubble, the Graves, the Bishop, the Old Woman.
  • For fantasy or horror, a single ominous name (Drowned Man's Reef Light, The Widow's Lamp) carries more weight than a whole coast of them. Keep the rest of your map plain so the dark one stands out.
  • Lights are often paired with the nearest settlement, so name the town and the light together: Sandwick village, Sandwick Harbor Light, The Nubble at Sandwick.

How are real lighthouses named?

Almost always after the geographic feature they stand on or warn against: a cape, head, point, rock, ledge, reef, shoal, bar, island or harbor pier. The feature name is followed by Light, Lighthouse or Light Station. A few are named for the keeper or a local figure, and a small number have memorial names.

What is the difference between a light, a lighthouse and a light station?

A lighthouse is the tower. A light is the navigational aid itself, so Americans often call the whole structure simply a Light (Owl's Head Light). A light station is the complete complex: tower, keeper's house, fog signal building and oil house. Range lights are pairs that line up to mark a channel.

Are the names on this page real lighthouses?

It is a mix. Some are famous real lights (Bell Rock, Cape Wrath, Minot's Ledge, Heceta Head) included because people search for them and they show the naming pattern. Most are invented in the same style, and the storybook names like The Widow's Lamp and The Sentinel of Carrow are purely fictional.

What makes a good fantasy lighthouse name?

Treat it as a character. Real conventions work well (Gullsgate Head Lighthouse) for a grounded setting, but a fantasy light can also be called by what it does or what people fear about it: The Sleepless Eye, The Stormcandle, Lantern of the Drowned, The Pale Watcher. Pair a plain geographic name with a dark nickname for the best of both.
