About nutcracker names

The wooden nutcracker soldier comes from the Erzgebirge, the Ore Mountains on the border of Saxony and Bohemia, where mining families turned to woodturning and toy making as the mines declined. The classic figures are men of authority with a lever in the back: kings, soldiers, foresters, policemen, miners and night watchmen. E. T. A. Hoffmann's 1816 tale The Nutcracker and the Mouse King and Tchaikovsky's 1892 ballet carried the figure far beyond Germany.

Rank names pair a playful rank with a nut, a tree or a workshop word: Captain Walnut, Colonel Chestnut, Sir Crackington, Sergeant Sawdust. Old German names such as Herr Klaus, Opa Wilhelm and Fritz Drechsler suit a nutcracker that looks like an heirloom; Drechsler is the German word for a woodturner. German word names run from Hauptmann Haselnuss (Captain Hazelnut) to Bergmann Glückauf, after the miners' greeting of the region. Kings, drummers, hussars and sentries cover the usual costumes, and the puns (Nutcracker Sweet, Stiff Upper Jaw, Board Stiff) are for the ones with a silly face.

A few names come from Hoffmann's tale and the ballet, both long in the public domain: Clara, Marie, Fritz, Drosselmeyer, the Mouse King, Princess Pirlipat and the nut Krakatuk. The ranks are for fun and belong to no real army.

How to choose nutcracker names

  • Name a nutcracker by his costume first. A crown calls for King Conker or The Walnut King, a drum for Drummer Rat-a-Tat or Tambour Wirbel, a tall fur hat for Guardsman Bearskin, a green coat for Förster Grünrock.
  • For a collection, give the whole shelf one theme: all ranks with nut names, all old German grandfathers, or a full marching band from Drum Major Rataplan down to Fifer Whistle.
  • German spelling is easier than it looks. The letter ß is a double s, so Nussbeißer and Weißbart can be written Nussbeisser and Weissbart, and the w in Walnuss and Wirbel sounds like an English v.
  • Write the name and the year under the base or on a tag. A nutcracker that comes out every December under the same name becomes part of the family tradition, and children remember Opa Wilhelm better than the red one.
  • Naming a pair? Max and Moritz come ready made, from Wilhelm Busch's 1865 picture story about two pranksters, and any two ranks can share a surname: Captain Walnut and Cadet Walnut.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for a nutcracker?

One that sounds a little stiff and a little grand. A playful rank with a nut or wood word works on almost any figure, as in Captain Walnut, Colonel Chestnut, General Hickory and Sir Crackington. For an old-world feel, pick a German name such as Herr Klaus, Meister Konrad or Gottfried Schnitzer.

What are the names in The Nutcracker story?

In E. T. A. Hoffmann's 1816 tale the girl is Marie Stahlbaum, her brother is Fritz, their sister is Louise and their godfather is Drosselmeyer, whose nephew is the enchanted nutcracker. The villains are the Mouse King and his mother, Madam Mouserinks, and the story within the story has Princess Pirlipat and the hard nut Krakatuk. Most ballet productions call the girl Clara, and the second act adds the Sugar Plum Fairy and Mother Ginger.

Are the German names real?

The given names and surnames are ordinary German ones, chosen for their woodland and workshop meanings: Drechsler is a woodturner, Schnitzer a carver, Nussbaum a nut tree, Eichhorn a squirrel and Förster a forester. Rank names such as Hauptmann Haselnuss and Rittmeister Tannenzapfen are playful inventions built from real German words, here Captain Hazelnut and Cavalry Captain Pinecone.

Do nutcrackers traditionally have names?

Not one by one. They are usually sold by type, such as king, soldier, forester or miner, so naming yours is a family custom and not a rule. That leaves you free to choose anything from The Chestnut King to Old Whitebeard.
