Santa has had a lot of names. An original Santa character needs a name that sounds old, warm and a little bit grand. The pattern that works is a traditional first name (Nicholas, Kris, Claus, or a Victorian choice like Barnaby or Cornelius) and a surname built from winter and hearth words: Frostbeard, Tinselbottom, Sleighwright, Puddingham. Titles do the same job in a different register: Father, Papa, Grandfather and Old Man all read as Santa, while Captain, Professor and Judge Kringle are good for comic versions.
