Generate kor names for Magic: The Gathering characters and custom cards: short Zendikari given names in the style of Nahiri, Ayli and Akiri, card-style names with epithets, and Rathi kor names using the en-Kor and il-Kor tribal suffixes.

About kor names

Kor are the pale, nomadic hook-and-rope climbers of Magic: The Gathering, first seen on Rath in Tempest and best known from Zendikar. Their canon names are short and vowel-led, usually two or three syllables with soft consonants: Nahiri the Lithomancer, Ayli the Eternal Pilgrim, Akiri the Line-Slinger, Munda the Ambush Leader, Orah the Skyclave Hierophant. A kor name rarely carries a family surname; instead a character is known by a deed, a role or a home region, which is why this list pairs plain given names with card-style epithets such as Hookmaster of Ondu, Sky Climber or Cartographer of Akoum.

On Rath the kor followed a different convention. Members of a tribe took the suffix en-Kor (Shaman en-Kor, Warrior en-Kor), while outcasts and rebels took il-Kor, the same system the Vec and Dal humans used. If you are writing a Tempest-era or Weatherlight-adjacent character, a name like Tahrin en-Kor or Dessa il-Kor immediately signals where they stand with their people.

For Zendikar kor, lean on the plane's geography and religion: the regions Ondu, Tazeem, Akoum, Murasa, Bala Ged and Guul Draz, the city of Sea Gate, the floating Skyclaves, and the three kor deities Kamsa (sky), Talib (earth) and Mangeni (sea). These details make an original name feel like it came off a real card.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Keep given names short and open-voweled (Ayli, Akiri, Tovan, Sevi); kor names avoid heavy consonant clusters and rarely exceed three syllables.
  • Skip surnames. Give the character an epithet instead, formatted like a legendary card: Name, comma, role or deed (Raska, Lantern Keeper).
  • Tie the epithet to kor culture: ropes, hooks, lines, climbing, the Skyclaves, pilgrimage, and the gods Kamsa, Talib and Mangeni all read as authentically kor.
  • Use en-Kor for a loyal Rathi kor and il-Kor for an exile or rebel; do not mix these suffixes with Zendikar regions, since they belong to different planes.
  • For custom cards, check that your name does not collide with an existing legendary creature on Scryfall before printing it on a proxy.

Frequently asked questions

What are kor in Magic: The Gathering?

Kor are a humanoid race with pale skin, white hair and a talent for climbing. They first appeared on the plane of Rath in the Tempest block and later became one of Zendikar's main peoples, where they live as nomads using hooks and ropes. The planeswalker Nahiri is the most famous kor.

What do kor names sound like?

Canon kor names such as Nahiri, Ayli, Akiri, Munda and Orah are short, two or three syllables, and start or end with vowels. Kor usually do not use surnames; on Zendikar a notable kor is identified by an epithet or home region, and on Rath by the tribal suffix en-Kor or il-Kor.

What is the difference between en-Kor and il-Kor?

On Rath, en- marks a loyal member of a tribe and il- marks an exile or rebel, a convention shared by the Vec and Dal humans. Cards like Shaman en-Kor and Warrior en-Kor show the loyal form; an original character named Kelda il-Kor would be an outcast.

Can I use these names for custom MTG cards or D&D characters?

Yes. The names are free to use for custom cards, fan fiction, Commander decks and tabletop characters. Only the canon characters (Nahiri, Ayli, Akiri, Munda, Orah) are owned by Wizards of the Coast; everything else is original and follows the same naming style.
