Khenra Name Generator
Jackal-folk names for Amonkhet twins and initiates
Generate khenra names for the jackal-headed twins of Amonkhet: short given names like Nakhet and Tahari, twin pairs such as Djaru and Djena, crop bynames like Senbu of the Tah Crop and trial epithets like Meruka Swift-Blade.
About khenra names
Khenra are the lean, jackal-headed people of Amonkhet, the desert plane of Magic: The Gathering, playable in D&D 5e through the free Plane Shift: Amonkhet supplement. Very few khenra are named in the cards and stories, so most players make their own. The names here are not canon: they are new names built on ancient Egyptian sound patterns, mostly two or three syllables, with a few longer formal names, and hard consonants such as kh, dj and tj, as in Nakhet, Senbu, Tahari and Meruka. The list was drafted to avoid the names of gods and pharaohs, Egypt's and Amonkhet's alike.
Khenra are almost always born as twins, so a fifth of the list is pairs that echo each other through a shared opening, a shared ending or a mirrored syllable: Nakhet and Neshet, Djaru and Djena. The male and female readings are a loose convention of this list alone: harder endings such as -ek, -ar and -u read male and softer ones such as -i, -a and -it read female.
The rest are longer forms: crop bynames for initiates (Senbu of the Tah Crop), trial and deed epithets (Tahari Twice-Tested), role names (Charioteer Djehkar), solemn names for a khenra who has outlived a twin (Djaru Half-Shadow), and survivor names for the ruined Amonkhet (Tesk Dustcloak).
How to choose khenra names
- Name the twin as well. Pick a pair, play one and hand the other to your DM or another player; even a twin who never appears gives your khenra a backstory.
- Start with the short given name. Add a crop byname only for a khenra raised as an initiate in the city, and a survivor byname for stories set after the city fell.
- Treat epithets as earned. Let the table award one after a deed in play instead of starting a first-level character with three.
- Say the name aloud. A common way to read these spellings is kh as the ch in loch, dj as j and tj as ch.
- Tah, Nef and Ahn are crop names from the cards. The other crop names here are made up, so you can treat them as your own table's crops.
Frequently asked questions
What is a khenra?
Khenra are the jackal-headed humanoids of Amonkhet, a desert plane in Magic: The Gathering. They are lean and quick, and nearly all of them are born as twins. D&D 5e players can use them through the free Plane Shift: Amonkhet supplement.
Are these khenra names canon?
No. Very few khenra are named in Magic's cards and stories, so this list is made of new names in the style of the setting. The borrowed setting terms are the crop names Tah, Nef and Ahn, which appear on cards, and a couple of place names such as Naktamun and the Luxa river.
How do I name khenra twins?
Choose two names that echo each other without being the same name. The pairs in the list do it three ways: a shared opening (Nakhet and Neshet), a shared ending (Hareth and Dakheth) or mirrored syllables (Djahu and Hudja). You can also build your own pair from two single names that share a sound.
What name suits a khenra who has lost a twin?
The list has solemn bynames for that story, such as Djaru Half-Shadow, Neshet Who Walks for Two and Tukhi, the Twin Who Lived. Some keep the twin's name inside their own, like Djaken Sorten-Remembered. Agree on the tone with your table first, since it is a heavy hook.
