Jackal Name Generator

Jackal names pull from two very different traditions. The first is ancient Egypt, where the jackal-headed Anubis (Inpu in Egyptian) guarded tombs and weighed hearts, Wepwawet was the Opener of the Ways, and Duamutef watched over the canopic jars. The Egyptian word for jackal, sab, and the cult centers of Abydos, Asyut, and Lykopolis all make names that sound like they belong on a black-furred jackal with a serious job. The second tradition is the jackal as trickster: Tabaqui in The Jungle Book, Karataka and Damanaka in the Panchatantra, and the scheming jackal of countless African folk tales. Those stories give you sly, quick, yappy names like Scamp, Gambit, Jinx, and Skulk.

Real jackals suggest a third register. Golden jackals (found from the Balkans to India) suit warm names like Honey, Saffron, Tawny, and Dune; black-backed and side-striped jackals of the African savanna suit Blackback, Ember, Sable, and Serengeti. The jackal word in local languages works beautifully: ibn awa (Arabic), bweha (Swahili), geedar or siyar (Hindi), shagal (Persian), tan (Hebrew), and qebero (Amharic). Jackals also sing at dusk, so twilight names (Vesper, Gloaming, Moonhowl) feel right for almost any jackal character.
