Find a call name for a police K9, a military working dog, a search and rescue dog or a pet named in that spirit: European import names like Arko, Falco and Asta, law words like Justice and Warrant, service words like Recon and Gunny, and radio names like Bravo and Kilo.

About K9 names

A working dog's name has a job to do. It has to be short, usually one or two syllables, and it has to start or end with a hard sound so that it cuts through traffic and wind. Arko, Kazan, Tygo and Kilo all fit that pattern. Many police and military dogs are bred in the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic and Hungary and keep the name they were given there, so the biggest group in this list is given names and plain words from those four languages, from Bram, Koen and Marek to Farkas, the Hungarian word for wolf.

The English groups follow the work. Law words (Justice, Warrant, Verdict, Docket) suit a police dog, rank and service words (Sarge, Gunny, Recon, Sentinel) suit a military dog, and phonetic alphabet names such as Bravo, Echo, Tango and Zulu suit both. Virtue names (Valor, Honor, Merit, Fidelis) are the ceremonial choice, and detection and search dogs get names about the nose and the trail: Spoor, Whiff, Trailhead, Breadcrumb.

There is a full group for females, led by classic European names such as Asta, Senta, Britta and Anouk, a group of guardians and soldiers from legend, and a short roll of real service dogs from history, named in the last question below.

How to choose K9 names

  • Count the syllables. One or two is the working standard because the name comes right before a command, so Arko, Bram, Kilo and Asta are quicker to use than Quartermaster or Codebreaker.
  • Check the name against your commands. If you train in German, say it next to Sitz, Platz, Fuss, Aus and Hier; in English, keep clear of names that rhyme with sit, down, stay and no.
  • Pick hard consonants for distance. K, T, D, B and G sounds, as in Kazan, Tygo, Docket and Gunny, carry much further than soft names full of l, m and n.
  • Say how an import name is pronounced before you choose it. Thijs is close to tice, Gijs has a throaty Dutch g, and Csaba starts with a ch sound, so ask a speaker or listen to a recording first.
  • Give a pet the everyday short form and keep the full phrase for fun. Got Your Six can be Six, Lima Charlie can be Lima and Due Process can be Dewey.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a police dog?

Short names with a hard sound work best, such as Arko, Falco, Kazan, Cezar, Tygo and Bravo. For a name that says what the dog does, try Justice, Badge, Deputy, Trooper, Warrant or Verdict. For a female, Asta, Senta, Kira and Zora are classic choices.

Why do so many K9s have European names?

Many working dogs are bred and started in the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic and Hungary, and a handler who takes over a trained dog usually keeps the name it already answers to. The import names in this list are ordinary given names and words from those languages, for example Wodan, Joris, Radek, Hynek, Zsolt and Bence, or Blesk and Villám, the Czech and Hungarian words for lightning.

What are good names for a military working dog?

Rank and service words are the obvious source: Sarge, Gunny, Recon, Sapper, Vanguard, Bastion and Dogtag. Phonetic alphabet names such as Alpha, Delta, Kilo and Sierra work well, as do radio phrases like Oscar Mike, Lima Charlie and Bravo Zulu with a short form for daily use.

Which names in the list belong to real service dogs?

Fifteen do, all dogs from history: Stubby and Rags from World War I; Chips, Smoky, Judy and Antis from World War II; Nemo from the Vietnam War; Lex, Lucca and Layka from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; Cairo and Conan from the special operations raids of 2011 and 2019; Bretagne and Trakr, who searched the World Trade Center site in 2001; and Barry, the mountain rescue dog of the Great St Bernard Hospice. Every other name is a general idea and does not refer to a particular dog.
