Jet Set Radio Name Generator
Rudie, gang and pirate-radio names for Tokyo-to
Generate Jet Set Radio style names for fan characters, skate crews and pirate-radio DJs: one-word rudie names like Treble, Mochi and Glitch, two-word gangs like Venom Parade and Static Saints, hosts like Professor Wavelength, and turf names like Tin Roof Terrace.
About Jet Set Radio names
Names in Jet Set Radio follow two simple patterns. The skaters, called rudies, go by one short everyday word: Beat, Gum, Corn, Cube, Combo, Clutch. The gangs pair two loud words: Poison Jam, Noise Tanks, Love Shockers, Rapid 99, Doom Riders. This list of 1,000 names keeps to those patterns, so a fan character or a rival crew sounds like it belongs in Tokyo-to.
Most of the list is original. The one-word names are spread over many word fields so they do not read like a random noun list: sound and music (Treble, Fuzz, Reverb), snacks and drinks (Mochi, Taffy, Seltzer), paint and color (Stencil, Magenta, Halftone), tech and arcade (Glitch, Joystick, Modem), speed (Swerve, Nitro, Slalom), street hardware (Turnstile, Sprocket) and doubled names in the mold of Yo-Yo (Tick-Tock, Zig-Zag). Around them sit two-word gangs such as Venom Parade and Static Saints, pirate-radio hosts after Professor K, police captains and company bosses, tag phrases and turf names in plain English.
A small share of the entries come from the games themselves: the playable skaters, the gangs, Professor K, Captain Onishima and districts such as Shibuya-cho and 99th Street. They are there as style anchors. This is an unofficial list with no connection to Sega.
How to choose Jet Set Radio names
- Pick a one-word name from the field that matches the character's look or habit. A kid who never takes the headphones off suits Treble or Reverb, a sweet tooth suits Mochi or Taffy, and a tinkerer suits Glitch or Modem.
- Build a gang by pairing a loud word with a plural or a second noun: Venom Parade, Chrome Hyenas, Static Saints. A number at the end, as in Rapid 99, also fits the series: Hyper 77.
- Give each crew one theme and let every member's name show it, the way the gangs of the games each have a single look. A snack crew could be Mochi, Churro and Wasabi; a workshop crew could be Sprocket, Ratchet and Rivet.
- For a radio host, a title plus one broadcast word carries the Professor K feel: Professor Wavelength, Doctor Dial Tone, Uncle Subwoofer.
- For fan fiction or fan art you plan to share, lean on the original names and keep the names from the games for the characters they belong to.
Frequently asked questions
What are good Jet Set Radio names for an original character?
Short everyday words work best, because that is how the games name their skaters. Try Treble, Fuzz, Mochi, Stencil, Glitch, Swerve, Sprocket or Tick-Tock. If the name would look right stitched on the back of a jacket, it fits.
Which names on the list come from the games?
A small group: the playable characters such as Beat, Gum, Combo, Cube, Clutch, Garam, Jazz, Roboy, Zero Beat and NT-3000, the gangs such as The GG's, Poison Jam, Noise Tanks, Doom Riders and The Immortals, Professor K, the dog Pots, the police officers Captain Onishima and Hayashi, the villain Goji Rokkaku with his Rokkaku Group and the Golden Rhinos, and places such as Tokyo-to, Shibuya-cho, Benten-cho, Kogane-cho, Grind City, Bantam Street, Dogenzaka Hill, Chuo Street, Hikage Street and Highway Zero. Every Japanese place name and surname on the list is from the games. Everything else was written in the same style for players' own characters and crews, so do not treat those names as part of the games.
Why are Tab and Corn both on the list?
They are the same skater. The first game calls him Tab in its Western releases and Corn in Japan, and Jet Set Radio Future uses Corn. In the same way Slate, Mew and Piranha of the first game are Soda, Bis and Sugar in Japan, and Jet Set Radio Future has Soda, Rhyth and Boogie in their places. All of these sit with the names from the games and none is offered as an original.
How do I name a rival gang or a turf for my own story?
For the gang, join two loud words that share a look, such as Voltage Vultures, Neon Jackals or Blackout Bats. For the turf, a plain place name with one odd detail does the job: Tin Roof Terrace, Vending Machine Alley, Seven Lantern Bridge. The turf names here are in plain English on purpose, apart from the districts taken from the games.
