Sonic Name Generator

Sonic character names follow a formula so recognisable that fans can spot an OC from the name alone: a short first name, usually one or two syllables, followed by "the" and the character's species. Sonic the Hedgehog, Knuckles the Echidna, Rouge the Bat, Blaze the Cat, Tangle the Lemur and Whisper the Wolf all fit it. The first name is almost always an ordinary English word or nickname that hints at personality or ability: Shadow is dark and brooding, Blaze uses fire, Silver is a shiny psychokinetic from the future, Vector is a big crocodile who runs a detective agency, and Charmy Bee is, well, charming.

There are exceptions worth copying. Some characters use a full name (Amy Rose, Miles "Tails" Prower, Sally Acorn, Maria Robotnik), robots use model numbers (E-123 Omega, E-102 Gamma), and villains often drop the species altogether (Infinite, Mephiles the Dark, Zavok, Chaos). IDW's comic cast keeps the classic pattern but with fresher species: Surge the Tenrec, Kit the Fennec, Jewel the Beetle, Trip the Sungazer.
