Generate Iraqi last names on their own: tribal names like Al-Jubouri and Al-Dulaimi, town names like Al-Samarrai and Al-Hilli, trade names like Al-Haddad and Al-Saffar, old city names like Pachachi and Chadirchi, and Kurdish, Turkmen, Assyrian and Chaldean family names.

About Iraqi last names

Most Iraqi family names are a nisba, an adjective ending in -i that ties a person to a group or a place. Al-Jubouri, Al-Dulaimi, Al-Shammari and Al-Tamimi point to a tribe or clan. Al-Baghdadi, Al-Basri, Al-Samarrai, Al-Hilli and Al-Rawi point to a town, often one the family left generations ago. A third group keeps a trade or an office: Al-Haddad the blacksmith, Al-Najjar the carpenter, Al-Saffar the coppersmith, Al-Sarraf the money changer.

Centuries of Ottoman rule left Turkish endings in the cities. The ending -chi marks a trade, as in Pachachi, Chadirchi and Shakarchi, and -li marks a place or a group, as in Al-Orfali and Bayatli. The list also holds Kurdish tribal and place names such as Jaff, Zebari and Hawrami, Turkmen names, Assyrian and Chaldean names such as Yousif, Hanna and Oraha, Mandaean names, and names of the old Jewish families of Baghdad such as Sassoon.

In daily life many Iraqis go by their own name followed by their father's and grandfather's names, and the family name appears mainly on documents. That is why given names such as Jassim, Kadhim and Khudhair also serve as last names here. Spellings follow common Iraqi usage. A surname can hint at where a family's roots lie, but it never proves a person's tribe, faith or background.

How to choose Iraqi last names

  • Build a full name the Iraqi way: a given name, then the father's given name, then a family name from this list. Ahmed Jassim Al-Rawi reads as Ahmed, son of Jassim, of the Al-Rawi family.
  • Keep Al- attached and spell each name one way. Al-Ubaidi also turns up as Al-Obaidi and Al-Obeidi in other hands, and families abroad often close it up as Alubaidi, so pick one form and stay with it.
  • Use a town name as backstory with care. Al-Hadithi, Al-Hiti and Al-Ani point to towns on the Euphrates, Al-Mosuli to the north and Al-Basri to the south, but such a name says where a family once came from, not where it lives now.
  • Never cut a compound name in half. Abdulhussein, Abdulridha and Abd Ali are each one name, and the first part cannot stand alone.
  • For a character from one community, go deeper on its own page. The Assyrian and Kurdish name generators linked below hold full names, where this page gives a modest share of family names.

Frequently asked questions

What are common Iraqi last names?

Widely met ones are the names of large tribes, such as Al-Jubouri, Al-Dulaimi, Al-Shammari, Al-Ubaidi, Al-Tamimi and Al-Zubaidi. Town names like Al-Samarrai and Al-Rawi and trade names like Al-Haddad and Al-Najjar are also heard across the country. All of these are in the list.

What does Al- mean in an Iraqi surname?

Usually it is the Arabic word for the. In front of a nisba it gives the sense of the one from a place or group, so Al-Baghdadi is the one from Baghdad and Al-Najjar is the carpenter. In some family names, such as Al-Saadoun, it is a different word that means the house or family of an ancestor, and both are written the same way in Latin letters. Some families write it closed up or drop it when they live abroad.

Why do some Iraqi names end in -chi or -li?

Both endings come from Ottoman Turkish. The ending -chi names a maker or seller and -li someone from a place or group. Pachachi, Chadirchi, Al-Qubanchi and Tabaqchali are city family names of this kind, and they sit in the list beside Arabic trade names such as Al-Sayegh and Al-Attar.

Does an Iraqi surname show a person's tribe or religion?

Not reliably. A tribal name can be carried by families of different communities, a town name only says where a family once lived, and many names are shared across Iraq. Treat a surname as a hint for a character's backstory and never as proof of anything about a real person.
