500 Arabic family names from the Gulf, the Levant, Iraq, Egypt and the Maghreb, such as Al-Otaibi, Haddad, El-Sayed and Benjelloun. Surnames only, in common Latin spellings.

About Arabic last names

Arabic family names grew out of a longer naming chain: a given name, the father's and grandfather's names, and a closing label called a nisba that points to a tribe, a town or a trade. In many countries that last label hardened into a hereditary surname only in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when states began keeping civil registers. That is why the list has both Masri and El-Masry for one name: the article, Al- in most countries, is optional in everyday use, Egypt writes it El-, and the Maghreb often writes El as a separate word.

The list draws on every part of the Arabic-speaking world. From the Arabian Peninsula come tribal names such as Al-Otaibi, Al-Qahtani and Al-Tamimi. The Levant favors trades and church offices, with Haddad (smith), Najjar (carpenter), Khoury (priest) and Sabbagh (dyer), beside compounds ending in -eddine or -allah. Egypt adds El-Sayed, El-Naggar and spellings with a hard g, and the Maghreb brings French-influenced forms such as Ben Ali, Bouzid, Benjelloun and Cherkaoui.

A surname can hint at a region, but it says nothing certain about a person's faith, ancestry or standing. Haddad and Mansour are carried by Christian and Muslim families alike, and a place name like Baghdadi may be many generations removed from the city.

How to choose Arabic last names

  • Match the spelling to the country. Masri and Najjar are the Levantine forms of names that Egypt writes El-Masry and El-Naggar, and North Africa often writes El as a separate word, so pick the form your character's passport would show.
  • Use the pattern as a clue to setting: Al- plus a tribe suggests the Arabian Peninsula or Iraq, a trade name suggests the Levant, and Ben, Bou or Bel points to the Maghreb.
  • Pair the surname with a given name from the same region. A Gulf tribal name sits oddly beside a first name spelled the French way, as it would be in Tunis or Casablanca.
  • Do not read religion into a name. Many Levantine and Egyptian surnames are shared across communities, so let the story, not the surname, establish a character's background.
  • If you are tracing your own family, use the list as a spelling aid only. Transliteration varies widely, so search records under several Latin spellings of the same name.

Frequently asked questions

What are some common Arabic last names?

Widely found family names include Haddad, Khoury, Mansour, Saleh, Nasser, Hussein and El-Sayed. The list also covers Gulf tribal names such as Al-Otaibi and Al-Shammari and North African names such as Ben Salah and Bennani. We give no ranking, because reliable counts differ from country to country.

What does Al- or El- mean in an Arabic surname?

Al- is the Arabic definite article, "the", and it usually introduces a nisba, a word that ties the family to a tribe, a place or a trade. Al-Tamimi means "of the Tamim tribe" and El-Masry means "the Egyptian". El- is simply the Egyptian and North African way of writing the same article, and many families drop it altogether.

Does an Arabic surname tell you someone's religion or origin?

Not reliably. Trade names like Haddad and Najjar are shared by Christian and Muslim families, and place names such as Halabi or Trabelsi only show where an ancestor once lived. Treat a surname as a hint about region at most, never as proof of faith, ancestry or status.

Why do the same Arabic names have so many spellings?

Arabic is written in its own script, and there is no single standard for turning it into Latin letters. French influence gives North Africa spellings such as Cherif and Bouzid, Egyptian pronunciation turns j into a hard g as in El-Gamal, and Lebanese families often use French-style forms such as Chahine. The list mostly keeps one common spelling for each name, so try variants when you search elsewhere.
