About Inuyasha names

Inuyasha takes place in Japan's Warring States period, and its names tell you what a character is before anyone draws a weapon. Powerful demons often carry the old boys' name ending -maru, as Sesshomaru does, or a single ominous word such as Naraku. The fang swords end in -ga, written with the character for fang: Tessaiga, Tenseiga, Bakusaiga. The mercenaries of the Band of Seven all end in -kotsu, bone. Humans get plain period names, many taken from nature: Kikyo is a bellflower, Sango is coral, Kohaku is amber.

This list follows the same rules for original characters. It runs from great demons (Hakuenmaru, Lady Shirayuki of the Northern Ridge) and half-demons to wolf, panther and thunder tribes, incarnations, priestesses, monks, demon slayers and villagers. It also names things and places: fang swords such as Raizenga, sacred objects, castles and forests, and attacks in the mold of Wind Scar and Dance of Blades, like Fang of the Crescent Tide.

A small share of the list is canon reference, kept so the patterns are easy to see, and the FAQ below names every one. The last group follows the Yashahime sequel, where the daughters are named for ideas: Towa is eternity, Setsuna is a moment and Moroha is a double-edged blade.

How to choose Inuyasha names

  • Pick the ending by what the name belongs to: -maru for a demon noble, -kotsu for a mercenary, -ga for a sword forged from a fang.
  • Give a great demon a territory. Lord Shunrai of the Storm Coast states rank and home in one line, the way the Western Lands does for Sesshomaru's family.
  • Name humans simply. A priestess or villager in this setting has one short given name and a role, such as Priestess Chitose or Tasuke the Ferryman.
  • Tie a half-demon's epithet to a parent or a weak point, as in Tsukihiko of the New Moon Night, since half-demons in the series lose their powers at a set time.
  • Pair a weapon with one signature attack and name them to match, for example the sword Hyosaiga with the attack Frost Scar.

Frequently asked questions

How are Inuyasha characters named?

By type. Demon nobles tend to have -maru names or a single dark word, the fang swords end in -ga, the Band of Seven end in -kotsu, and humans have short period names that often come from plants, stones and seasons. The original names here keep to those habits, so Kiyomaru reads as a demon, Gekkoga as a sword and Tekkotsu as a mercenary.

Which names in the list are canon?

The canon reference names are Inuyasha, Kagome, Kikyo, Kaede, Miroku, Sango, Shippo, Kirara, Sesshomaru, Rin, Jaken, Naraku, Kagura, Kanna, Koga, Ayame, Kohaku, Myoga, Totosai, Bankotsu, Jakotsu, Renkotsu, Suikotsu, Mukotsu, Kyokotsu, Ginkotsu, Hakudoshi, Byakuya, Ryukotsusei, Izayoi, Midoriko, Towa, Setsuna, Moroha, Kirinmaru and Hisui. Every other name is an original written in the style of the series, and none of them is presented as canon. Many originals borrow terms and motifs of the setting, such as the Sacred Tree, the Western Lands, the Tree of Ages or the Rainbow Pearls, but the names themselves are new. Short everyday given names inside longer entries, such as Koharu or Satsuki, are ordinary Japanese names and can coincide with a minor character.

What do -maru, -ga and -kotsu mean?

The ending -maru is a traditional Japanese ending for boys' names that is also given to swords and ships. In the fang swords, -ga is the reading of the character for fang, and -kotsu in the Band of Seven is the character for bone.

Can I use these names for a Yashahime character?

Yes. The next-generation group follows the sequel's habit of naming children after ideas, with names such as Kanata, Kizuna and Enishi and titles like Princess Half-Demon Chigiri. The original names are meant for fan fiction, roleplay and tabletop characters, while the canon names belong to Rumiko Takahashi and her publishers.
