Moana Name Generator
Villagers, wayfinders, islands and canoes for the ocean
Browse 1,000 Moana style names. The list opens with names from the two films, from Moana and Gramma Tala to Simea and Loto, then moves to new names for the same ocean: villagers like Mele the Net Mender, elders like Chief Tavita, wayfinders like Kai of the Outer Reef, animal sidekicks like Lehua and Popo the Piglet, islands like Motu Lagi and canoes like Star Chaser.
About Moana names
Moana means ocean in Hawaiian, Māori, Samoan and several other Polynesian languages, and the films name most of their world the same way, with real words. Motunui joins motu, island, and nui, big. Heihei is the Māori word for chicken, pua is Hawaiian for flower and tala is Samoan for story. Maui is far older than the films: he is a hero of living traditions across the Pacific.
The first 21 names here are from the films, given as names only: thirteen from the first, from Moana and Gramma Tala to Lalotai, and eight from Moana 2, from Simea to Motufetu. It is a starting point for fans, not a complete cast list.
Everything after Motufetu is new and written for the same ocean. Villagers carry real given names from Samoa, Tonga, Hawaiʻi, Aotearoa, Tahiti and Fiji. Elders get a title (Chief Tavita, Tūtū Nālani, Koro Hōne), workers a trade (Mele the Net Mender) and canoe crews an epithet (Kai of the Outer Reef). Animal sidekicks are named with one real word, as Pua and Heihei are. Islands, reefs and canoes pair real words into plain descriptions (Motu Manu, bird island; Ngaru Nui, big wave) or use plain English. They are not a map of real places. Spirits and creatures of the deep get long titles in English.
How to choose Moana names
- Keep each name inside one language. Tūtū is a Hawaiian word for a grandparent, koro and kuia are Māori words for an elderly man and woman, and tautai is a Samoan word for a master fisherman or navigator, so the list pairs them that way: Tūtū Kamaka, Kuia Riria, Tautai Lemalu.
- Name an animal sidekick the way the films do, with one everyday word. Lehua is a Hawaiian blossom, niu is coconut in many Pacific languages, pepe is a butterfly in Samoan and kororā is the little penguin in Māori.
- Keep the marks. A macron lengthens a vowel and the ʻokina is a consonant, so leaving them out of Hōkūpaʻa or ʻIʻiwi changes how the word is said and sometimes what it means.
- Maui, Hina, Tangaroa and Pele belong to living Pacific traditions. For a new demigod or spirit, use a title in plain English, such as Keeper of the Night Sky, Counter of Stars, and leave the sacred names alone.
- For an island, start with motu (island in Samoan, Tongan, Māori and Tahitian) or moku (Hawaiian) and add one word of the same language, as in Motu Manu and Moku Lehua.
Frequently asked questions
What are the Moana character names?
The first film has Moana, the demigod Maui, Gramma Tala, Chief Tui, Sina, the pig Pua and the rooster Heihei, with Te Fiti, Te Kā, Tamatoa and the Kakamora. Moana 2 adds her little sister Simea, the crew members Loto, Kele and Moni, and Matangi, Nalo and Tautai Vasa. Those names open the list, which is not a complete cast record.
Which names are from the films and which are new?
The first 21 entries, from Moana to Motufetu, are names from the two films. Every name after that is an original idea for the same setting, such as Mele the Net Mender, Chief Tavita, Kai of the Outer Reef or Motu Lagi. The new names are not presented as film characters, and this page is a fan resource with no connection to Disney.
Are the new names real Pacific names?
The given names are real ones used in Samoa, Tonga, Hawaiʻi, Aotearoa New Zealand, Tahiti and Fiji, and the animal names and many of the island, reef and canoe names are built from real words of those languages. The trade bynames, the crew epithets and the long spirit titles are invented in English. The island and canoe pairs are plain descriptions made for this list. A simple pair can match a real islet somewhere in the Pacific by chance, so do not read them as real places.
What do the animal names mean?
Each is an everyday word. Honu is the Hawaiian word for turtle, moa means chicken across much of Polynesia, kiwi and kea are New Zealand birds with Māori names, and uto is breadfruit in Fijian. Entries such as Popo the Piglet add the animal, and popo is a ripe coconut in Samoan.
