Violins by Stradivari and Guarneri carry the names of past owners (the Lady Blunt, the Messiah, the Cannon), drummers christen kick drums, and synth players name modular rigs after spaceships. A nickname turns a factory object into a companion with a biography, and it usually falls into a few families: an old-fashioned first name (Matilda, Hephzibah), a title (The Contessa, The Magistrate), a description of the finish or wood (Honeywood, Tortoiseshell Tess), a joke about the sound (Old Growl, Squeaky, Lipsplitter) or a nod to how it was acquired (Pawn Shop Pearl, The Inheritance).

The second half of the list is for writers and game designers who need instruments that do not exist. Invented instruments sound real when they follow the naming logic of real ones: a material plus a family word (Wolfbone Flute, Glass Throat, Brassgourd), a place of origin (Waterharp of Lisse, Tongue-Drum of Ashar), or an old European term like crwth, psaltery, rebec or shawm dressed with a new modifier. Keep the family word recognisable so a reader knows roughly what it sounds like.

For your own instrument, start from something true: the colour, the scratch on the lower bout, the song it always wants to play, or the person who owned it before you.
