The Blackthorns go fully Roman (Julian, Tiberius, Livia, Drusilla, Octavian), and the Silent Brothers and Iron Sisters take Old Testament names in the Brother Zachariah and Sister Cleophas pattern. Surnames are the real signature: old Nephilim families carry English-sounding compound names built from nature and landscape words, such as Lightwood, Herondale, Blackthorn, Fairchild, Starkweather, Lovelace, Penhallow and Rosewain, many of them lifted from Victorian novels and poets.

Because the Clave is global, Institutes from Mexico City to Mumbai and Beijing add names like Rosales, Villalobos, Joshi, Maduabuchi and Ke, and Shadowhunters raised by Downworlders can end up with hyphenated names like Lightwood-Bane. Family name matters enormously in the Chronicles, since it signals bloodline, politics and in the Herondales' case a prophecy or two, so the fun of an original character lies in choosing a surname that feels like it has been in the Clave for centuries.
