Generate ideology names for worldbuilding, political sims and fiction: coined -isms, founder doctrines, compound labels like Agrarian Syndicalism, and schools of thought that sound like they have a century of pamphlets behind them.

About ideology names

Real ideologies are named in only a handful of ways, and copying those habits is what makes an invented one feel lived-in. The oldest pattern is a root plus -ism: a value (liberal, social), a thing to be protected (nation, environment) or a founder (Marx, Thatcher) turned into a creed. The second is the compound label, where one word modifies another to mark a splinter: Agrarian Syndicalism, Techno-Feudalism, Lunar Monarchism. Greek-suffix government words (Geniocracy, Thalassocracy) describe who rules rather than what they believe, and founder names come in two flavors, the blunt -ism (Varenism) and the more reverent Thought, Doctrine, Line or Synthesis (Hollowmoon Thought, the Voss Synthesis).

The names that sound most convincing carry the history of a fight. Prefixes such as Neo-, Post-, Orthodox, Reformed, Left and Radical imply an earlier version someone broke away from, which is why Reformed Solarism feels older than plain Solarism. Insults that became labels (Leveller, Whig, Impressionist) are another rich vein, so a faction called the Hollow Men or the Unsworn should probably have been named by its enemies first.

For a setting, give one ideology a dull institutional name, one a founder's name and one a mocking nickname that stuck; that mix reads far more real than a matched set of -isms.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick the grammar that fits the source: -ism for a belief system, -cracy or -archy for a form of rule, Doctrine or Compact for something written down, Thought or Line for a single leader's teachings.
  • Build the name from something concrete in your world (a river, a crop, a founding document) rather than an abstract virtue; Three Rivers Compact tells a story that Unity Doctrine does not.
  • Signal schisms with prefixes and qualifiers (Orthodox, Reformed, Neo-, Post-, Left) and let each splinter keep the parent's root so readers can track the family tree.
  • Give at least one movement a nickname coined by its opponents (the Tillers, the Hollow Men) and make it the name everyone actually uses.
  • Say the adjective form out loud before committing: Solarist, Verdantist and Tidalist work in dialogue, while some roots produce awkward -ist forms.

Frequently asked questions

How do real ideologies get their names?

Mostly from a root plus -ism: a core value (liberalism, socialism), a thing to be defended (nationalism, environmentalism) or a founder (Marxism, Gaullism). Compound forms like anarcho-syndicalism mark splinter groups, and many labels (Tory, Whig, Leveller) began as insults from opponents.

What is the difference between an -ism, a -cracy and a doctrine?

An -ism names a belief system, a -cracy or -archy names who holds power (Technocracy, Gerontarchy), and a doctrine, compact or creed names a specific written or spoken teaching. Using all three across one setting makes its politics feel layered rather than invented in a single afternoon.

Can I use these names for NationStates, Stellaris or a tabletop campaign?

Yes. The compound and founder-style names work as-is for nation descriptions, ethics and faction sheets, and the coined -isms are short enough to fit custom ethic or civic fields. They are all original, so nothing conflicts with real parties or movements.

How do I write a fictional ideology once I have the name?

Decide three things: what it says is wrong with the world, who it blames, and what it promises. Then write one slogan and one rival's nickname for it. A name like Reformed Solarism already implies an earlier Orthodox Solarism and a split, which gives you the history for free.
