About HOI4 focus names

In Hearts of Iron IV a national focus is one decision a country commits to: build the factories, reform the army, pick a side. A mod's focus tree needs dozens of them, and each needs a name short enough to sit under its icon. The names that work come in three shapes. A noun phrase names the program (Night Fighter Program, The Great Railway Plan). An imperative gives the order (Rearm the Fleet, Mobilize the Reserves, Seek Allies Abroad). An article phrase announces a turning point (A New Constitution, A Separate Peace).

This list of 1,000 names covers the branches a full tree usually has: industry and infrastructure, army doctrine and equipment, navy, air force, political paths, diplomacy, research and secret projects, economy and trade, the home front, internal reform and late-game war aims. Border focuses use generic geography, such as Secure the Northern Border, or invented places, such as Fortify the Velmark Line, so they suit an invented country or can be swapped for your own map.

The wording is generic and alternate-history on purpose, with no real leaders, parties or regimes. A small share are plain names the game itself uses, such as Industrial Effort and Naval Effort, kept as style anchors. Every entry is 30 characters or shorter.

How to choose HOI4 focus names

  • Use an imperative for a focus that acts at once and a noun phrase for a standing program. Mobilize the Reserves reads as an order, Coastal Artillery Batteries as a line in a budget.
  • Name a fork so the player sees the choice. Mutually exclusive focuses work best as a matched pair: Leave the Gold Standard against Return to Gold, or Restore the Crown against A New Constitution.
  • Let a branch escalate. Open with a board or a study (The Armaments Board, Radar Experiments), follow with the build (Expand the Arsenals, Radar Chain) and close with the payoff, so the names alone tell the story of the branch.
  • Swap the invented places for your own map. The Halvern Gap or Karsund Naval Base become your mod's provinces with one find and replace, while generic ones like Fortify the Eastern Marches work as they are.
  • Keep the name short and put the detail in the description text. If a name runs long, drop the adjective or the article first: The Great Railway Plan can become Railway Plan.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good HOI4 focus name?

A short phrase that says what the country decides, in the dry voice of a cabinet paper. Double the Steel Output, Defense in Depth, Call Early Elections and Guarantee the Small States each tell the player what the focus is about before they read the tooltip. Avoid full sentences and anything too long to read at a glance under an icon.

Are these focus names from the game?

Most are not. They are original names written in the style of focus names, for use in mods. Fifteen are plain names the game itself uses, kept as style anchors: Industrial Effort, Construction Effort, Production Effort, Infrastructure Effort, Army Effort, Equipment Effort, Motorization Effort, Doctrine Effort, Army Innovations, Naval Effort, Flexible Navy, Aviation Effort, Political Effort, Extra Research Slot and Secret Weapons. The game has a very large number of focuses, so other entries may match one by coincidence. This site is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.

Why are there no real countries or leaders in the list?

A focus for a real country usually names a real event, and you know your mod's history better than a list can. These names stick to institutions any invented or alternate-history country could have, such as a parliament, a crown, councils or a general staff. The geography is generic or invented, as in The Corridor to the Sea and The Ardeska Corridor, so you can replace it with places from your own map.

Can I build a whole focus tree from this list?

Yes. Pick an opener, a middle and a payoff for each branch and reroll until they read as one line of policy. An industry branch could run Foundations of Industry, Retool the Factories, Double the Steel Output, and a political one Call Early Elections, The Coalition Government, A New Constitution. You still write the effects and descriptions yourself.
