Titles for strategy and war games, digital or tabletop
Generate titles for war and strategy games, from grand strategy like Iron Meridian and Fields of Attrition to hex-and-counter battles like Black Sand: Iwo Jima 1945, real-time strategy like Harvester Down and science fiction campaigns like The Kessler Front.
About War game names
War games are named differently depending on the scale they simulate. Grand strategy titles sound like history books and treaties (Iron Meridian, Concert of Powers, The Long Peace), because the player runs a state and not a squad. Tactical games go the other way and name a place, a unit or a moment: Hedgerow Company, Hold Until Relieved, Hull Down. Real-time strategy favors short, hard words that fit a logo, such as Harvester Down or Bastion Protocol.
Board wargames have their own convention. The classic hex-and-counter title is an evocative phrase, a colon, then the battle and year, as in Black Sand: Iwo Jima 1945 or Arrowstorm: Agincourt 1415. The list includes a full group of these, from ancient, Napoleonic, American Civil War, World War and Cold War battles, alongside naval and air titles like Crossing the T and Bomber Stream.
The rest covers warfare that never happened: science fiction (The Kessler Front, Rods from Orbit), fantasy (Banners of the Broken Crown, Pike and Sorcery), trench-era and alternate history (Creeping Barrage, Diesel Empires), and lighter titles for mobile games or a gaming group's in-jokes, like Zone of Control Freaks. Use them for a game in development, a mod, a club campaign or a fictional game inside a story.
How to choose War game names
- Let the scale choose the style. A game about nations wants an abstract, bookish title like Strategic Depth, while a platoon-level game wants something a soldier might say, like Weapons Free or Out of Fuel.
- For a historical board wargame, keep the battle and year in the subtitle. Players search by battle, so Backhand Blow: Kharkov 1943 tells them the topic and still gives you a memorable lead phrase.
- Check the dates if you adapt a historical title to another battle. A wrong year on the box is the first thing a wargamer will notice.
- Search the title on the big game stores and on BoardGameGeek before you commit. Military vocabulary is shared by everyone, so short generic titles are the most likely to be in use already.
- Say the title with a number after it. If it still works as a series, like Tripwire Force 2 or a new battle after the colon, it will serve you longer than a one-off joke.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good war game title?
A good title tells players the scale and the era before they see a screenshot. Iron Meridian and Guns Before Butter sound like grand strategy, Halftrack Platoon sounds tactical, and Void Fleet Tactics is clearly science fiction. Short titles with one strong image are easier to remember and easier to fit on a box or a store tile.
Do the historical titles use real battles and dates?
Yes. Each historical subtitle pairs a real battle with the year it was fought, for example The Great Redoubt: Borodino 1812 or Seventy-Six Hours: Tarawa 1943. The lead phrases point to well-known features of those battles, such as the Hot Gates in Hot Gates: Thermopylae 480 BC. If you move a title to a different battle, look up the date yourself.
Can I use one of these names for my own game?
Yes, the list is meant as a starting point for developers, modders and tabletop designers. We have not looked up whether any title is already used by a published game, and with common military terms that is quite possible. Search the stores and BoardGameGeek, and get legal advice before a commercial release.
What is a hex-and-counter wargame?
It is the traditional board wargame format: a map overlaid with a hexagonal grid, and cardboard counters that stand for units. Titles in that hobby usually name the battle and the year, which is why one group here follows the pattern of Fortress in the Desert: Tobruk 1941. The same naming style works for digital wargames that use hex maps.
