Grunge Name Generator

A grunge name is anti-glamour by design. The original Seattle scene used plain, slightly dated given names (Kurt, Layne, Eddie, Chris, Kim, Courtney, Mark, Jerry) with ordinary surnames, and nicknames that sounded like they were earned in a basement rather than chosen by a publicist. So the first register here is first-and-last names that feel thrift-store real: short, clipped firsts like Dell, Rae, Sid, Wren, Jude and Tova paired with working-class and Scandinavian-tinged Northwest surnames such as Sorensen, Kessler, Halvorsen and Stahl. If it would look right on a flyer photocopied at Kinko's in 1991, it works.

The second register is the moniker: a mundane or faintly gross noun attached to a friendly first name (Kitty Kerosene, Johnny Sludge, Tommy Tetanus, Mudflap Mary) or used alone as an alias (Scuzz, Slackjaw, Buzzkill, Castoff, Nevermind). The vocabulary comes from the scene itself: flannel, feedback, fuzz pedals, four-track demos, tape hiss, drop-D tuning, pawn shops, laundromats, futons and rain. Usernames follow the same rules in lowercase, with underscores, periods and a 91 or 93 where a birth year would go (rain_city_rae, tape_deck_heart, sad.flannel.kid).

What makes a name sound grunge rather than goth or punk is the shrug. Punk names are aggressive, goth names are ornate; grunge names are tired, damp and a little funny, and they never try too hard.
