Generate 90s band names in every style of the decade: grunge and post-grunge, Britpop, nu-metal, pop-punk and ska, boy bands and girl groups, riot grrrl, emo, shoegaze, trip-hop, and hip-hop crews. Original names only, ready for a cover band, tribute act, or period story.

About 90s band names

Every 90s scene had its own naming grammar, and a good 90s band name copies the grammar rather than the band. Grunge and post-grunge favored two mismatched nouns with a sour or heavy feel (Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Candlebox), so Rust Cathedral or Paper Lung reads instantly as Seattle. Britpop went the other way: clipped, cocky single words and small English details (Blur, Pulp, Suede, Supergrass), which is where Brolly, Gingham and Council Estate Romeos come from. Nu-metal wanted brutal, lower-case, often deliberately misspelled one-word names (Korn, Staind, Deftones), and pop-punk and ska liked sarcastic school-age phrases and numbers (Blink-182, Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish).

The softer end of the decade has its own tells. Emo and indie bands used whole sentences and hometown nouns (Sunny Day Real Estate, Texas Is the Reason), shoegaze chose hazy one-word names (Ride, Slowdive, Lush), boy bands and girl groups went for bright phrases with a stylized spelling (Boyz II Men, All Saints, *NSYNC), and hip-hop crews announced themselves as clans, syndicates and collectives. One-hit wonders often had the most absurd names of all (Toad the Wet Sprocket, Chumbawamba).

Every name here is original and grouped loosely by scene, so scan for the register you want and check it is not already taken before you print the T-shirts.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick the scene first, then the name: grunge wants two heavy nouns (Tar Blossom), Britpop wants one clipped word (Parka Weather), nu-metal wants a misspelled single word (Krawl), emo wants a sentence (We Drove All Night).
  • Numbers were everywhere in the 90s (Blink-182, Matchbox 20, 311, Eve 6); attach a plausible-sounding one, like a route, locker or exit number, and the name immediately dates itself to the right era.
  • Nostalgia references (pagers, dial-up, mixtapes, roller rinks) work for a tribute or cover band, but lean on mood rather than products if you want the name to sound like it actually came from 1996.
  • Say the name the way a radio DJ would introduce it ('...that was Honey Bucket, here on the new rock alternative') and drop anything that sounds like a joke you will hate by the third gig.
  • Search the name plus 'band' on Bandcamp, Discogs and a trademark database before committing; plenty of 90s-sounding names belong to forgotten 90s bands.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real 90s bands?

No. Every name is original, written to match the naming styles of real 90s scenes rather than copying existing bands. That means you can use them for your own band, a fictional band in a screenplay or novel, or a themed playlist, though you should still check that nobody has taken the name since.

How do I make a band name sound like the 90s specifically?

Use the decade's patterns: two heavy, unrelated nouns for grunge; a clipped one-word name for Britpop or shoegaze; a misspelled, lower-case-feeling word for nu-metal; a school-age phrase or a number for pop-punk; a full sentence for emo; a stylized plural with a Z for a boy or girl group.

Can I use one of these for a 90s cover band or tribute act?

Yes, and the nostalgia-flavored names (Pager Kids, Dial-Up Romance, Roller Rink Casanovas) are written with cover bands in mind. For a tribute to one specific band, a pun on that band's song titles is usually stronger than a generic 90s name.

What makes grunge band names different from nu-metal band names?

Grunge names are wry and slightly literary: mismatched nouns with a tired or ironic mood (Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Temple of the Dog). Nu-metal names are blunt, aggressive and short, often a single word with a deliberate misspelling or an all-lowercase logo (Korn, Staind, Adema).
