About Occitan names
Occitan is the Romance language of southern France, from Gascony and Limousin across Languedoc and Auvergne to Provence, and it is closer to Catalan than to French. In the 12th and 13th centuries it was the language of the troubadours, poets such as Bernart de Ventadorn, Jaufre Rudel, Bertran de Born and the Comtessa de Dia. Their exact names are not entries here. The list uses the same given names and the same byname patterns instead: a trade or a trait, as in Isarn Fabre, or de plus a place, as in Rigaut de Ventadorn.
The forms are Occitan, not French: Guilhem and not Guillaume, Peire and not Pierre, Azalaïs and not Adélaïde. Modern entries use today's classical spelling, such as Jòrdi, Estève and Mirèlha. Provençal entries follow the spelling of Frédéric Mistral, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1904 and whose poem Mirèio made the name Mireille known across France.
Most surnames are Occitan words in their official French spelling: Fabre and Faure mean smith, Sabatier shoemaker, Teissier weaver, Bousquet a small wood, Lacombe the valley. Northern Occitan turns ca into cha, so Castan becomes Chastang. The full names are combinations made for fiction and games, not records of real people.
How to choose Occitan names
- Match the entry to the era. A given name with a trade byname or de plus a place suits the age of the troubadours and the Albigensian Crusade, while entries with accents such as Jòrdi Delmas belong to the present day.
- Match the region too. Arramon, Menaut and surnames like Lafargue and Dupouy are Gascon, Vincèn and Mirèio are Provençal, and surnames in Cha such as Chastang and Chassaing come from Auvergne and Limousin.
- For pronunciation, lh sounds like the lli in million and nh like the ny in canyon. A plain o is said oo, so Tolosa is roughly too-LOO-zo, with the final a close to a soft o.
- A de byname says where a person comes from, and it did not always mean nobility. Swap in the town or castle of your own setting, and write d before a vowel, as in Sicart d'Albi.
- French records wrote given names in French for centuries, so a man called Guilhem at home often appears as Guillaume on paper. If you trace family roots in the Midi, search both forms.
Frequently asked questions
How do Occitan names differ from French names?
Occitan is a separate Romance language, so the same saint or ancestor gives a different form: Joan for Jean, Peire or Pèire for Pierre, Estève for Étienne, Mirèlha for Mireille. The list keeps the Occitan forms, as in Guilhem Castanh and Estève Pagès. It also avoids Catalan spellings, although the two languages share many names.
Are the famous troubadours in the list?
No. We left the exact names of famous troubadours and trobairitz such as Peire Vidal and Azalais de Porcairagues out of the entries and kept them for the text. The entries reuse the given names and the pattern with other places, as in Saura de Tolosa, Braida de Carcassona and Pons de Miraval. With 500 combinations of common medieval names, a match with some lesser-known historical person is still possible.
Why is the same name spelled in several ways?
Occitan has more than one writing tradition. Medieval entries use the spelling usual in editions of troubadour texts, modern entries use the classical norm with its accents, and Provençal entries use Mistral's norm. That is why you will find Guilhem Castanh, Guilhèm Causse and Guihèn Laugier side by side, and also a few surnames written the Occitan way, such as Nadal Roqueta for the official Rouquette.
Which entries fit Crusader Kings or a story of the Albigensian era?
Pick the medieval entries, which pair a given name such as Amiel or Aton with a trade or a place: Amiel de Carcassona, Esclarmonda Faure or Aton de Montsegur. Lords and ladies usually took the name of a castle or town, while townspeople went by a trade such as Sabatier or Molinier. Crusader Kings has an Occitan culture, so these forms sit well beside its own characters.
