Names for pet gerbils built on the animal itself: steppe and desert names like Gobi, Saxaul and Altai, coat colors such as Argente, Saffron and Schimmel, habit names like Thumper, Shredder and Sentry, seed names like Millet and Flax, and ready-made pairs like Dune and Drift.

About gerbil names

The pet gerbil is the Mongolian gerbil, a small burrowing rodent from the steppe and semi-desert of Mongolia and northern China, and that home is the first place this list looks. About a quarter of it is steppe and desert names: Gobi, Altai, Saxaul, Steppe and Dune, rivers and places such as Orkhon, Tuul and Karakorum, and Mongolian words like Naran (sun), Tsetseg (flower) and Ger, the felt tent that English speakers call a yurt.

The animal's habits supply the next layer. Gerbils dig tunnels, drum their hind feet, stand upright to look around and turn any cardboard tube into confetti, which gives you Tunnel, Thumper, Paradiddle, Sentry, Periscope and Shredder. Coat names follow the colors keepers use, including Argente, Burmese, Schimmel, Nutmeg, Saffron, Dove, Slate and Lilac, and the seed strand runs from Millet and Flax to Buckwheat and Sorghum.

Gerbils are social and are usually kept in same-sex pairs or small groups, so about one entry in nine is a ready-made pair, from Dune and Drift to Naran and Saran. The generic rodent standbys are kept to a handful, so the list shares little with the hamster and mouse pages. The styles are mixed through the list, so every batch shows several at once.

How to choose gerbil names

  • Start from the coat. A golden agouti, the wild color, suits Agouti, Gobi or Ochre, a nutmeg or saffron gerbil can simply carry the name of its color, a dove or lilac suits Turtledove or Lila, and a slate suits Shale or Smoke.
  • Watch for a few days before you decide. The one that drums on the tank floor earns Thumper, Bongo or Rimshot, the one on its hind legs earns Sentry, Periscope or Lookout, and the one taking the cardboard apart earns Shredder or Head of Shredding.
  • For a pair, pick two names that start with different sounds, such as Gobi and Altai or Millet and Flax. Naran and Saran looks lovely on the tank label, but two names that close are hard to tell apart when you say them.
  • Say a Mongolian name out loud before you commit. Kh is a throaty h, like the end of the Scottish word loch, so Khangai and Khongor start with that sound, and Tsetseg is said TSEH-tseg.
  • Keep the everyday name to one or two syllables. A long title such as Minister of Tunnels or Cardboard Connoisseur is fun on the tank label and will shrink to something short in daily use.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a gerbil?

The names that last tend to describe the animal: Thumper and Bongo for the drumming feet, Tunnel and Burrow for the digging, Sentry and Periscope for the upright lookout pose, Shredder for what happens to cardboard. For something less expected, look to the steppe: Gobi, Altai, Saxaul, Nomad and Orkhon all point back to where the Mongolian gerbil comes from.

What should I name two gerbils?

The list holds 55 ready-made pairs. Some are split words (Tumble and Weed, Card and Board, Sand and Castle), some are matched themes (Gobi and Altai, Millet and Flax, Nutmeg and Saffron) and some go by sound (Pitter and Patter, Tick and Tock). You can also take any two single names from one style, such as Thumper and Rimshot.

What do the Mongolian names on the list mean?

Naran is the sun and Saran the moon, Altan means golden, Erdene is a jewel, Tsetseg a flower, Chuluun a stone and Tenger the sky. Els is sand, Takhi is the wild horse of the steppe, and a Ger is the round felt tent also known as a yurt. Others are places: the Gobi desert, the Altai and Khangai mountains, the Orkhon and Tuul rivers, and Karakorum, the old capital of the Mongol Empire.

Are the color names on the list real gerbil colors?

Yes. Agouti, Argente, Burmese, Schimmel, Nutmeg, Saffron, Dove, Slate, Lilac and Pied are all terms gerbil keepers use for coat colors and patterns, and each one is on the list as a name. Around them sit looser color names such as Shale, Crocus, Mead and Citrine for owners who want the shade without the show term.
