French Sword Name Generator
Épée, rapier and saber names with English glosses
Generate French sword names, each with a short English gloss: blades of the old epics such as Durendal and Joyeuse, and original names like Tranche-Nuit (Night Cleaver), La Fidèle (The Faithful) and Fleur-d'Acier (Flower of Steel). The list covers knightly swords, rapiers, executioner's blades, cavalry sabers and fantasy blades.
About French sword names
French gives a sword its grammar before it gives it a name. Épée and lame are both feminine nouns, so a blade named with an adjective takes the feminine form: La Fidèle, La Hardie, L'Insoumise. The other great habit is the compound of a verb and a noun joined by a hyphen, the pattern behind everyday words like perce-neige: Tranche-Nuit, Perce-Brume, Brise-Heaume, Fend-Écu. The old epic poems, the chansons de geste, supply the models. Thirteen entries from those poems and the early romances are marked Attested, each with the owner of the sword: Durendal for Roland, Joyeuse for Charlemagne, Hauteclaire for Olivier.
No other entry is an attested sword. The rest are new compounds, or French words, sayings, saints and places used as blade names. Each carries a short English gloss in parentheses, so you know what you are putting in a character's hand. The styles run from saints and relics (Sainte-Geneviève, La Sainte-Épine) and heirlooms of a house to the language of the fencing hall for rapiers (L'Estocade, Coup-de-Jarnac), executioner's swords, cavalry sabers with soldier slang such as La Latte and Le Bancal, fantasy blades, and grim courtesies like Sans-Merci and Mes-Excuses.
Some glosses give two senses on purpose, because the French does: Perce-Neige is a snow piercer and the snowdrop, La Polie is both polished and polite.
How to choose French sword names
- Keep the gender straight when you adapt a name. An adjective name follows épée or lame and stays feminine (La Vaillante, not Le Vaillant), while a name that is a noun keeps its own gender, as in Le Bancal or Le Glaive.
- Match the style to the weapon. Verb compounds like Brise-Heaume and Fend-Écu suit a knight's war sword, fencing terms such as La Riposte or Tac-au-Tac suit a rapier, and a legal phrase like Sans-Appel belongs on an executioner's blade.
- To build a variant of your own, keep the pattern: a verb in the third person, a hyphen, then a noun with no article, as in Tranche-Nuit. Look the result up in a dictionary before it goes into print.
- Give the gloss once, the first time the blade is drawn, then use the French alone. Readers remember Belle-Vengeance without being told Fair Vengeance on every page.
- Entries marked Attested belong to a named hero of the old poems. Use them as a reference or a family legend in your setting, and give your own character one of the other names.
Frequently asked questions
What are the famous French swords of legend?
The chansons de geste name several. Durendal is Roland's sword, Joyeuse is Charlemagne's, Hauteclaire is Olivier's, Almace belongs to Archbishop Turpin, Courtain to Ogier the Dane and Flamberge to Renaud de Montauban. These are in the list marked Attested with their owner, and no other name on the page is an attested sword.
Why are so many French sword names feminine?
The French words for sword and blade, épée and lame, are feminine, so an adjective used as a blade's name agrees with them. That gives La Fidèle (the faithful), La Farouche (the fierce) and L'Indomptable (the untamable). Names that are nouns keep their own gender, which is why the list also has Le Bancal and Le Glaive.
How do verb and noun names like Tranche-Nuit work?
French builds compound nouns from a verb and its object joined by a hyphen, as in the everyday word perce-neige. Sword names follow the same pattern: Tranche-Nuit is night cleaver, Perce-Brume is mist piercer, Brise-Heaume is helm breaker and Fend-Écu is shield splitter. The list uses more than forty different verbs, so the pattern stays varied.
Are the English glosses exact translations?
They are short working glosses, close to the literal sense, not full dictionary entries. Where a name has a second meaning in French the gloss gives both, as in Tranche-Montagne (mountain cleaver, also a braggart) or La Soie (the tang of a blade, also silk). If a name is going on a book cover or a tattoo, confirm it with a French speaker or a dictionary first.
