Generate Tarutaru names in the two patterns of Final Fantasy XI: hyphenated, rhyming male names like Tapi-Rapi, Rido-Sarido and Hakino-Makino, and female names that end on a doubled syllable like Tamimi, Kiruru and Mikururu.

About Tarutaru names

The Tarutaru of Final Fantasy XI have the most rule-bound names in Vana'diel, and the rule depends on gender. A Tarutaru man carries a name in two halves joined by a hyphen, and the halves rhyme or echo each other: Ajido-Marujido, Koru-Moru, Yoran-Oran. Often the second half is simply the first with a new opening sound or an extra syllable in front. A Tarutaru woman has a single word that ends on a doubled syllable: Shantotto, Kupipi, Apururu.

This list is split about evenly between the two patterns. A small share are characters from Windurst and elsewhere in the game, kept for reference. The others are original names built on the same sound rules, from short pairs like Tapi-Rapi and Guri-Muri to longer ones like Rido-Sarido and Hakino-Makino, and from three-beat women's names like Tamimi and Kiruru to four-beat ones like Mikururu and Tsukimimi.

One practical point: the character creator takes a single word of letters only, 3 to 15 characters, so a hyphen will not go in. Women's names fit as they are. For men, the list includes closed-up forms such as Tokuroku and Kobitobi, and most of the shorter pairs can be run together the same way.

How to choose Tarutaru names

  • Say a male name aloud before you settle on it. The two halves should bounce off each other, as in Moku-Roku or Zeru-Meru; if the rhyme takes effort to hear, pick another pair.
  • For a player character, count the letters. A closed-up pair such as Tokuroku or Hanomano sits well inside the 3 to 15 letter limit, and even a long pair like Shimo-Tarashimo comes to 14 once the hyphen is gone. If you lengthen a pair yourself, count again.
  • Lean on open syllables of a consonant plus a vowel. That is what makes most names sound Tarutaru rather than Hume or Elvaan, and it is why Nopipi and Sumimi work at a glance.
  • Match the weight of the name to the character. Three-beat names like Kimomo read as young and quick, and longer ones like Sohranene or Gashiro-Bashiro suit a professor or a minister.
  • If your linkshell or party already has a Tarutaru, avoid sharing an ending with them. Two names that both close on -ruru or -moru are easy to mix up in chat.

Frequently asked questions

How are Tarutaru names formed?

Male names have two parts joined by a hyphen, and the parts rhyme or repeat a sound, as in Koru-Moru or the original Pomu-Tomu. Female names are one word whose last syllable is doubled, as in Kupipi or the original Rikoko. Most use short, open syllables.

Can I use a hyphenated Tarutaru name for my own character?

Not as written, because player names in Final Fantasy XI are a single word of letters only, 3 to 15 characters long. Use a female-pattern name, one of the closed-up forms in the list such as Kirupiru or Dozumozu, or close up a short pair yourself. Whether a given name can still be registered on your world is something only the game can tell you.

Which names in the list come from the game?

A few dozen belong to characters you can meet, among them Ajido-Marujido, Shantotto, Kupipi, Zonpa-Zippa and Hakkuru-Rinkuru. They are here for reference and for fan works. The rest are original names in the same two patterns and are not official in any way.

Are Tarutaru names the same as Lalafell names?

No. The Lalafell of Final Fantasy XIV take a forename and a surname that echo each other by clan rules, so every name is two words. A Tarutaru has one name: a hyphenated rhyming pair for men, a single doubled word for women.
