About fennec fox names

The fennec (Vulpes zerda) is the smallest fox there is, a cream-colored animal of the Sahara that usually weighs under four pounds and carries ears about six inches long. The ears shed heat and pick up prey moving under the sand, and the fox spends the hot hours in a burrow and comes out at dusk. The word itself comes from Arabic fanak, so the list starts at home: Fanak, Zerda and Thaalab, the Arabic word for fox.

Most of the names come from the fennec's own map. There are Saharan and North African places such as Tassili, Hoggar, Merzouga and Siwa, Arabic given names and words like Noor (light), Layla (night), Najma (star) and Qamar (moon), and Tamazight ones such as Itri (star), Tafukt (sun) and Tala (spring). A night animal earns night names, and many bright stars reached English through Arabic, so Altair, Deneb, Rigel and Aldebaran are here too.

The rest is about the look. Radar, Satellite, Dumbo and All Ears are for the ears, Peanut, Pico, Thimble and Half Pint for the size, and Couscous, Oat, Parchment and Nougat for the sandy coat, with dune, wind and caravan words like Barchan, Harmattan and Astrolabe to round things out.

How to choose fennec fox names

  • Short names with a clear vowel, such as Itri, Noor, Pico or Siwa, are the easiest to call. Save a mouthful like Zubenelgenubi for a story or a registered name and use a nickname day to day.
  • Match the name to what you notice first. Ears point to Radar, Sonar or Satellite, the pale coat to Couscous, Oat or Parchment, and the tiny frame to Peanut, Thimble or Smidge.
  • Before you borrow a word from Arabic or Tamazight, look up its meaning and how it is said. Arabic has its own script and Tamazight is written in Tifinagh, Arabic or Latin letters depending on the region, so one name can have several spellings in English.
  • For a pair, pick a set that already belongs together: Isli and Tislit, the groom and bride lakes of a Moroccan legend, Mizar and Alcor, a double star, or simply Tagine and Couscous.
  • Writing a character? A place name sets the scene in one word. Tassili, Hoggar, Ténéré and Chinguetti all tell a reader which desert they are in.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a fennec fox?

Names that play on the ears, the size or the desert work best. Radar, Dumbo and Satellite fit the ears, Peanut and Pico the size, and Tassili, Najma, Itri and Couscous bring in the Sahara. The list mixes all of these styles, so a few rounds will show you which one sounds like your fox.

Where does the word fennec come from?

It comes from Arabic fanak, and the scientific name is Vulpes zerda. All of those are in the list as Fanak, Zerda and Vulpes Zerda, next to Thaalab, the everyday Arabic word for fox. Algeria's national football team is nicknamed Les Fennecs, which is in the list as well.

Are the Arabic and Tamazight names real words?

They are drawn from everyday given names, such as Layla, Idir and Amira, and from plain words, such as Qamar for moon and Aman for water. Spellings vary because both languages are romanized in more than one way. If the name is for something lasting, ask a speaker how it sounds and what it carries.

Can I keep a fennec fox as a pet?

The rules differ by country and, in the United States, by state, and some places ban fennecs or require a permit. Look up your local law before anything else, and find a vet who treats exotic animals. Many of these names work just as well for a plush fennec, a game character or a mascot.
