Fantasy Police Force Name Generator
City watches, constabularies and stranger keepers of the peace
Generate names for the law-keeping bodies of a fantasy world: city watches and town guards like The Saltmarket Watch and Tarnwick Town Guard, official bodies like Harrowgate Constabulary and The Crown's Justiciars, street nicknames like The Brass Buttons, and stranger forces like the Office of Arcane Infractions and Deeplode Hammerguard.
About fantasy police force names
Every fantasy city needs someone to break up the tavern brawl, and what that body is called tells players a great deal about the place. This list covers fantasy police force names of every kind, and it is also the page for city watch names and town guard names. A plain name with a place in it, such as The Saltmarket Watch or Tarnwick Town Guard, suits an ordinary town. A nickname taken from the uniform, such as The Brass Buttons or The Saffron Cloaks, is what locals say in the street.
The older English words do a lot of work here. A reeve was a local official, and the shire-reeve is where the word sheriff comes from. Constables, bailiffs, beadles and catchpoles each held a small piece of the law, and thief-takers were private catchers paid by reward. Royal bodies sound different again: The Crown's Justiciars answer to a throne, not to a town council.
The list mixes fifteen styles: town and city watches, uniform nicknames, constabularies and reeves, royal law arms, district units, gate and wall guards, magical offices such as the Office of Arcane Infractions, dwarven, elven, halfling and orcish forces, road and march wardens, corrupt or secret police, thief-takers and bounty offices, and courts and gaols. Every entry is an organization, not a person.
How to choose fantasy police force names
- Give a city two names for the same force: the official one on the charter and the one people use. Harrowgate Constabulary goes on the warrant, while The Brass Buttons is what the baker calls them.
- Let the name say who pays. A body funded by townsfolk, such as The Burgher Watch of Orvesse, behaves differently from one that answers to a noble, such as The Duke's Law Hand.
- Split a big city by district. A harbor unit, a market unit and a gate unit, such as The Harborside Patrol, The Fishmarket Rounds and The Guard of the Five Gates, give you rivalries and arguments over who has to deal with the body in the canal.
- For magical law enforcement, a dry clerk's register is often more believable than a grand one. Office of Summoning Permits and The Wand Inspectorate suggest forms, fees and queues, which is how most people meet the law.
- Save the sinister names for cities where the law is the threat. The Quiet Hand or The Listening Room tells players at once that asking the watch for help is not an option.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good name for a fantasy city watch?
The simplest pattern is the place plus the word Watch, as in The Saltmarket Watch, Vessenmoor City Watch or Watch of Old Carrow. For more color, use a uniform nickname such as The Saffron Cloaks or The Pewter Helms, or name the force after its patch, as in Bridge Wardens of Old Carrow.
What is the difference between a city watch, a town guard and a constabulary?
These are loose conventions, not rules. In most fantasy settings a watch patrols the streets and keeps the peace, often at night, while a guard holds the gates and walls and is closer to soldiers. A constabulary is a body of constables and sounds later and more organized, which suits a large, well-run city.
Are these names taken from D&D or another setting?
Not on purpose. They are written in the general style of fantasy fiction and claim no tie to any published world, so you can drop them into a homebrew city, a novel or a game. They have not been checked against any setting, and simple combinations of common words can turn up anywhere, so search a name yourself before you publish with it.
What do you call magical or secret police in a fantasy world?
Magical law enforcement usually takes either a warden name, such as The Spell Wardens or The Hexbreakers' Hall, or a bureaucratic one, such as Office of Arcane Infractions. Secret and corrupt forces work best with quiet, indirect names like The Whisper Office, The King's Ears or The Bought Badges.
