Fantasy Insect Name Generator
Invented insect species for fantasy bestiaries and worlds
Generate fantasy insect names for a bestiary, a novel or a tabletop campaign: invented species like Lanternback Beetle and Dreamsilk Moth, folk names like Widow's Candle, giant mounts, magical kinds and legends like The Queen Beneath the Hill.
About fantasy insect names
Real insect names are built from a describing word and a family: stag beetle, hawk moth, paper wasp. Invented species sound right when they follow the same logic: Lanternback Beetle, Dreamsilk Moth and Hollowhive Hornet. The family gives the reader a body and a habit at once (a beetle is armored, a mantis waits in ambush, an adult mayfly lives only briefly), and the descriptor carries your world: its magic, its trades and its superstitions.
The 1,000 names here run through several registers. Compound species cover beetles, moths, butterflies, wasps, bees, ants, flies, dragonflies, crickets, cicadas and mantises. Around them sit folk names a villager would use (Widow's Candle, Jack-in-the-Thatch), giant and dire insects as mounts, haulers and dungeon vermin, magical kinds (Spell-Eater Moth, Cinderhoney Bee), working species kept for silk, honey, dye, wax, lamp oil and venom, habitat names from marsh to glacier, hives and swarms (The Red Tide Ants), single coined words and a few legends such as The Queen Beneath the Hill. A small share are spiders, scorpions and centipedes, which are not true insects but sit beside them in most bestiaries.
These are species, not pet names. Before you use one, decide what its descriptor means in your world: Lanternback could be a real glow, a pale marking or a habit of gathering at lamps.
How to choose fantasy insect names
- Anchor each invented species to a real insect family (beetle, moth, hornet, cicada) so readers picture it at once. Keep pure coinages such as Thrumwick or Zizzeral for a creature the story treats as strange.
- Give one insect two names: a field-guide name for the scholars and a folk name from the village, such as Ploughman's Friend or Thatcher's Itch. The gap between the two says a lot about who lives there.
- A giant insect needs a job. Saddleback War Beetle is a mount, Caravan Millipede hauls freight and Sewer Roach King is something to clear out of a cellar.
- For a hive or a swarm, name the whole body instead of the single animal: The Red Tide Ants, The Wax Parliament. A collective name makes a colony read like a faction.
- Look up any compound you plan to publish. Real entomology is full of dramatic common names, so a name that sounds invented may already belong to a real insect.
Frequently asked questions
How do I name a fantasy insect species so it sounds believable?
Pair one vivid descriptor with a real insect family, the way real common names work. Runeshell Beetle, Vespertide Moth and Bog Chanter Cicada all give the reader the body plan first and the fantasy second. Two or three words is usually enough.
Are spiders, scorpions and centipedes insects?
No. Insects have six legs and a body in three sections. Spiders, scorpions, ticks and mites are arachnids with eight legs, centipedes and millipedes are myriapods, and woodlice are crustaceans. The list includes a small share of them, such as Thornspinner Spider and Emberclaw Scorpion, because a fantasy bestiary usually shelves them together.
Can I use these names for giant insects and mounts in a tabletop game?
Yes. Names such as Riding Mantis, Wagonhauler Scarab and Dire Hornet are written for creatures big enough to saddle, harness or fight. The list is names only, so size, abilities and stats are yours to decide.
Are these real insects?
No, the names are invented for fiction. Real insect names can be just as dramatic, though, so a name here may happen to match or resemble a real common name. If that matters for your project, look the name up before you use it.
