Generate fairy tale book titles for a new tale, a retelling or a storybook collection, such as The Tinker and the Three Crows, The Girl Who Wove the North Wind, A Crown of Nettles and The Lantern Book of Wonder Tales. The 1,000 titles run from nursery and bedtime stories to dark retelling novels.

About fairy tale book names

A fairy tale title is short on mystery and long on promise. The plainest pattern simply names the two things that will meet, which is why so many tales are called The X and the Y: The Weaver and the West Wind, The Cobbler and the Copper Kettle. Others name the deed (The Girl Who Wove the North Wind), count something in threes, sevens or twelves (The Twelve Lanterns of Midwinter), or put a crown on an unlikely head (The Princess with the Wooden Crown).

The list covers those shapes and several more: animal and trickster tales, how and why stories, short pair titles such as Salt and Starlings, bedtime and nursery books, fractured comic versions, darker retelling novels pitched at teen readers, and titles for whole collections like Tales the North Wind Told. Some titles borrow the flavor of Nordic, Slavic, Celtic or Arabian Nights storytelling. Those are written in the style of those traditions and are not titles of real folk tales.

Retelling titles name public-domain stories such as Cinderella or Rapunzel so a reader knows at a glance what is being retold. Everything else is invented for this page, so treat each title as a starting point and swap in the trade, creature or object your own tale turns on.

How to choose fairy tale book names

  • Match the shape to the age group. Pair titles and nursery titles suit picture books, deed titles such as The Boy Who Sold His Shadow suit middle grade, and short stark ones like Briar Sleep suit teen and adult retellings.
  • Name something a child could draw. A copper kettle, a goose or a glass orchard does more work on a cover than a word like destiny or magic.
  • For a retelling, keep one clue to the original in the title or subtitle, such as a slipper, a spindle or the tale's name, so readers who love that story can find yours.
  • Give a collection a title about where or when the stories are told (a fireside, a spinning room, a winter night) and save the single-tale titles for the contents page.
  • Search the exact title in bookstores and library catalogs before you settle on it. Titles are often shared, but you do not want to sit beside a recent book with the same name.

Frequently asked questions

Are these the titles of real fairy tales?

No. The titles are new ones built on the patterns that traditional tales use, The Fiddler and the Frost Giant and The Bathhouse Spirit's Bargain included. Many lean on a well-known motif, so one can sit close to the title of an old tale, and the list has not been compared with the old collections. The retelling titles go further on purpose: they mention public-domain tales such as Cinderella and Snow White by name, because that is how retellings are labeled.

Can I use one of these titles for my own book?

Yes, take any of them as it stands or change the parts to fit your story. In the US and the UK a title on its own is generally not protected by copyright, and nobody has compared this list with published books, so search the title yourself before you print it on a cover.

What should I call a book of several fairy tales?

Collections usually name the setting of the storytelling or the teller instead of a single plot. Titles in the list such as Tales from Under the Hazel Tree, The Hearthside Treasury and Twelve Tales for Twelve Nights follow that habit. A number in the title works well when it matches the number of stories inside.

Are the regional titles taken from real folklore?

No. Titles such as The Troll Under the Fjord Bridge, The Firebird's Tail Feather or The Selkie's Sealskin Shawl use well-known motifs from Nordic, Slavic and Celtic storytelling, but the titles themselves are new. If you want to retell a specific traditional tale, go back to a published collection of that tradition for the story itself.
