Generate executioner names for medieval, fantasy and grimdark stories and games: tradesman names like Hob the Headsman and Ambrose Dempster, German and French masters such as Meister Hans and Monsieur de Valcourt, hooded titles like The King's Justice, heavy boss names, and names for the axe itself.

About executioner names

An executioner in a story is rarely just a figure in a hood. In much of medieval and early modern Europe the office was a shunned trade that tended to stay in families, passed from father to son and married between the households of neighboring towns. That is why this list leans on surnames and trade bynames: English pairs such as Ambrose Dempster and Kit Dempster the Younger, and plain period names with the job attached, like Hob the Headsman, Wat Hangman and Tam the Lockman, the old Scots word for the post.

German towns spoke of the Scharfrichter, Nachrichter, Henker or Freimann, and Meister Hans was a stock nickname for whoever held the job, so the German names run from Meister Hans to Hans Rabensteiner and Veit Seiler. In France the formal title was master of the high works, and the holder was often called Monsieur de plus the name of his town, which gives the list Monsieur de Valcourt beside Maître Guillaume and Gaspard Billot.

The rest is for fantasy and games: hooded titles tied to a square or a court (The King's Justice, The Red Hood of Tanner's Square), grimdark full names, heavier boss names like The Hollow Judge, and names for the axe or sword, such as Widow's Sigh and Last Word.

How to choose executioner names

  • Decide whether the town knows the character's name at all. People who fear their headsman call him by the office (The Bishop's Headsman, The Silent Office), while a story told from his side needs an everyday name like Matthias Blockley or Jörg Schwertfeger.
  • Use the family. Giving a father, an heir and a widow the same surname (Old Fabian Axton, Ephraim Axton, Judith Axton) tells readers the trade is inherited without a line of exposition.
  • Tie a title to a place. The Red Sleeve of Saltmarket or The Hangman of the Old Bridge roots the character in one town, which suits a city campaign or a local legend.
  • Keep boss names for bosses. The Gallows Colossus or Malgoth the Unpardoning fits a dungeon encounter; for a tired tradesman with a household to feed, choose from the period names.
  • Name the tool last. A weapon called Mercy, Old Impartial or Grandfather's Axe shows how the character sees the work: as kindness, duty or inheritance.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for a fantasy executioner?

For a human tradesman, try a period name with the job or a trade surname attached: Hob the Headsman, Barnaby Corder, Konrad Beil or Étienne Lacorde. For a figure the whole town fears, use a title instead, such as The King's Justice, The Last Face or The Finisher of the Law.

What is the difference between a headsman and a hangman?

They are two words for the same office. Headsman points to the axe or sword and hangman to the gallows, and a town's executioner was usually called by whichever word was local. Older English also has deathsman, and Scots has lockman, both of which appear in the list.

Why do so many of these names share a surname?

Because the office tended to run in families. Executioners were often kept apart from other trades, so sons followed fathers and families intermarried. Repeated surnames such as Dempster, Corder, Axton and Rabensteiner let you build a dynasty for your setting.

Are these the names of real executioners?

No. The list is built from period given names, trade words and ordinary surnames for fictional characters, and it is not a record of historical officeholders. Meister Hans is a generic old nickname for the role, not one person. If a combination happens to match someone real, that is coincidence.
