Closed Species Name Generator
Cute, brandable species names for your creature designs
Generate closed species names for a creature kind you design and run: animal blends like Otterfinches and Narwolves, cozy compounds like Buttonsnoots and Pebblebellies, soft coined words like Mimbels, and rarity variants like Royal Sashtails.
About closed species names
A closed species is a creature kind that one artist designs and runs. The creator decides who may make a character of it, usually through adoptables, design slots or a written set of rules. A semi-open species loosens those rules, and an open one lets anybody join in. Whichever kind you plan, the species name does three jobs at once: it is the brand on your masterlist, the tag people type under their art, and a plural that has to sound natural in a sentence like "I own two Otterfinches".
That is why every entry here is a species noun with a workable plural, not one character's name. The 1,000 names run through about fifteen styles: two animals in one word (Badgermoths, Narwolves), cozy compounds built on a body part (Buttonsnoots, Pebblebellies), soft coined words (Mimbels, Pelloos), food and tea kinds (Custard Newts, Kettlecalves), plant, weather, sea, plush and spooky-cute kinds, pocket-sized mythic creatures (Thimble Wyverns), and subspecies or rarity variants such as Greater Plumewhistles and Royal Sashtails.
These are made-up words, and nobody has compared them with the species that already exist in art communities. Treat a name you like as a candidate, then search for it where you post before you build a brand on it.
How to choose closed species names
- Search the name before you use it. Look it up on the art sites, adoptable groups and servers where you post, with and without a space, as a tag and as plain text. If another creator already runs a species under that name or a close spelling, choose a different one.
- Say the singular and the plural out loud: one Mimbel, two Mimbels; one Opalhide, a whole litter of Opalhides. If either form is awkward to say or to spell, people will shorten it for you, and not always the way you would like.
- Test it as a tag. A closed compound such as Buttonsnoots is one clean hashtag; a two-word name such as Custard Newts needs a decision on whether the tag is closed up, and that decision should be written into your species rules.
- Name the species after the trait that never changes. If every design must have tasseled ears or a gemstone hide, a name like Tassel-Ears or Opalhides tells a newcomer what makes a design valid before they read a single rule.
- Keep the variant style for subspecies and rarity tiers. A base name plus Greater, Lesser, Royal, Dusk or Dawn (Lesser Dimplehorns, Dawn Chirrups) lets you add tiers later without renaming the species.
Frequently asked questions
What is a closed species?
It is a creature kind designed by one artist, or a small team, who sets the rules for it: which traits a design must have and who may create new characters. Designs usually reach other people as adoptables, customs or approved slots. Semi-open species let people make their own design under conditions, and open species have no such limit.
What makes a good closed species name?
It is short, easy to spell, sounds like a kind of animal and takes a plural without trouble. Compounds such as Badgermoths and Pebblebellies describe the creature at a glance, while coined words such as Mimbels and Pelloos leave the design open. A good name also works as a single tag.
Are these names already used by another species?
We do not know, and you should not assume either way. The 1,000 names are made-up words that have not been compared with the species lists of any art community. Search a name on the platforms you use before you put it on a masterlist, and pick another if someone else is already using it.
How do I name subspecies and rarity variants?
Keep the base name and put one word in front of it. The list shows the pattern with entries such as Greater Plumewhistles, Royal Sashtails and Common Garden Snufflets: size words, habitat words, coat words and times of day all work. Use the same handful of words across the whole species so the tiers stay easy to read.
