Generate Lord of the Rings dwarf names built the way Tolkien built them: short Old Norse roots, patronymics like 'son of Glóin', and hard-won epithets like Oakenshield and Ironfoot. Includes the canon dwarves of Durin's Folk plus lore-accurate names drawn from the same Norse source Tolkien used.
About lotr dwarf names
Almost every dwarf name in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings comes from one place: the Dvergatal, a list of dwarf names in the Old Norse poem Völuspá. Thorin, Balin, Dwalin, Fíli, Kíli, Dori, Nori, Ori, Óin, Glóin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Durin, Dáin, Náin, Thráin and Thrór all appear there, and even 'Oakenshield' is a translation of the Norse epithet Eikinskjaldi. That is why Tolkien's dwarves sound the way they do: one or two syllables, hard consonants, and a preference for endings in -in, -i, -ur and -ór.
Within the story these are 'outer' names used among other peoples. A dwarf's true name in Khuzdul, the secret tongue made by Aulë, is never revealed to outsiders and never written on a tomb. What outsiders do hear are patronymics and titles: Gimli son of Glóin, Thorin son of Thráin son of Thrór, Dáin Ironfoot, Thorin III Stonehelm, Balin Lord of Moria. Only a handful of Khuzdul personal names survive at all, such as Azaghâl of Belegost and Telchar the smith of Nogrod.
The list above keeps the canon dwarves of Durin's Folk, adds the rest of the Dvergatal names Tolkien left unused (Andvari, Frosti, Regin, Sindri, Vestri, Nordri), and pairs them with lore-appropriate patronymics, kindred names from the Seven Houses (Longbeards, Firebeards, Broadbeams, Ironfists, Stiffbeards, Blacklocks, Stonefoots), and earned epithets in Tolkien's plain-spoken style.
Tips for choosing a name
- Build a full dwarf name as 'given name + son/daughter of + father's name' rather than a surname; Middle-earth dwarves do not use family names.
- Reserve epithets like Ironfoot or Oakenshield for deeds the character has actually done in your story; Tolkien's dwarves earned them, they were not born with them.
- Keep the given name to one or two syllables with a hard opening consonant (Th-, D-, B-, G-, N-) so it sits naturally beside the canon names.
- If your dwarf is not one of Durin's Folk, tie them to another of the Seven Houses (Firebeards of Nogrod, Broadbeams of Belegost) to add depth without inventing new lore.
- For a mixed-canon campaign, pull the unused Dvergatal names (Frosti, Regin, Vindalf) so your original characters sound like they belong beside Thorin's company.
Frequently asked questions
Where do Lord of the Rings dwarf names come from?
Nearly all of them come from the Dvergatal, the catalogue of dwarfs in the Old Norse poem Völuspá. Tolkien lifted Thorin, Balin, Dwalin, Fíli, Kíli, Óin, Glóin, Durin, Dáin and the rest directly, and translated Eikinskjaldi as Oakenshield.
Do Tolkien's dwarves have last names?
No. They use patronymics such as Gimli son of Glóin, plus earned epithets like Ironfoot or Stonehelm. Their true Khuzdul names are kept secret and never told to non-dwarves.
What do the accents on names like Glóin and Thráin mean?
The acute accent marks a long vowel in Tolkien's Norse-derived spelling, so Glóin is 'GLOH-in' and Thráin is 'THRAH-in'. Dropping the accents is fine for casual use, but keeping them looks more authentic.
Can I use these dwarf names in my own book or D&D game?
The Old Norse names themselves are public domain and free to use anywhere. Specific Tolkien characters and places (Thorin Oakenshield, Erebor) are best kept to fan works and home games rather than commercial products.
