Dragon Quest Name Generator
Hero, party and monster names in true DQ style
Generate Dragon Quest names for your hero, party members, NPCs and monster companions: canon favourites like Erdrick, Alena and Sylvando alongside original names written in the voice of the English localisation. Perfect for DQ3 HD-2D, DQ11, DQ Builders and Dragon Quest Monsters.
About Dragon Quest names
Dragon Quest names have a flavour no other JRPG quite shares, mostly because of the series' English localisation. Heroes and royals get short, old-fashioned European names (Erdrick, Alena, Kiryl, Carnelian, Hendrik), townsfolk sound like they wandered in from a British village (Gemma, Derk, Amber, Dunstan, Wilf), and each region borrows a real-world accent: Heliodor is Germanic, Puerto Valor is Spanish, Gondolia is Italian, Gallopolis is Arabian, Hotto is Japanese and Sniflheim is Norse. Villains get heavier, more theatrical names such as Dhoulmagus, Mordegon, Rhapthorne and Orgodemir.
The other half of the DQ tradition is the monster nickname. Since Dragon Quest V and the Monsters spin-offs, recruited creatures have carried affectionate, slightly silly pet names (Healie, Saber, Hackerel), and the localisation team loves puns on the species name, so a Cureslime named Custard or a Killing Machine called Killjoy fits right in.
This list mixes canon characters from the mainline games and spin-offs with original hero names, NPC names built from title plus given name the way in-game dialogue introduces them (Innkeeper Bartle, Dame Gisela), region-flavoured full names and a run of nicknamed monster companions. Pick a canon name if you want recognition, or an original one so your hero feels like your own.
How to choose Dragon Quest names
- Match the name to the region where your character comes from: a Heliodorian knight suits Konrad or Gisela, a Puerto Valor dancer suits Marisol, and a Sniflheim hunter suits Brynjar or Ylva. The game's own cast follows this rule strictly.
- Most Dragon Quest games cap hero names at 8 characters, and the classic NES entries allowed only 4, so favour short names (Erik, Jade, Rab, Mia) or check that your pick still reads well when truncated.
- For a monster companion, use a pun or a pet name on the species (Custard the Cureslime, Killjoy the Killing Machine) rather than a grand fantasy name; it is how the localisation names wild recruits.
- Avoid using a canon name for your own hero if you plan to share screenshots or stories, since Erdrick, Loto and Solo are already recognised as specific characters in the series.
- NPC names read best with a trade or title in front (Miller Hob, Apothecary Minna, Sister Prudence), which is exactly how villagers introduce themselves in DQ dialogue boxes.
Frequently asked questions
Are these names from the actual Dragon Quest games?
Some are. The list includes canon heroes, party members, royals and villains from Dragon Quest I through XI plus Builders, Heroes and Treasures. The rest are original names written in the style of the English localisation, so you can find a name for your own hero or OC that sits comfortably next to the real cast.
What name should I give my hero in Dragon Quest III HD-2D or Dragon Quest XI?
Anything up to the character limit works, but the community tends to go one of three ways: a canon-adjacent name like Erdrick or Eleven, a short real name in the localisation's style (Arlo, Elsie, Tamlin), or a joke name. If you want the dialogue to feel natural, pick a one- or two-syllable name that can be shouted in battle text.
Why do Dragon Quest monsters have nicknames?
From Dragon Quest V onward, recruited monsters are given friendly nicknames rather than species names, and the Dragon Quest Monsters series built an entire game around it. The English versions lean into puns and pet names, which is why this generator includes options like Mercury the Metal Slime and Pudding the Dessert Demon.
Can I use these names for fan fiction or a D&D campaign?
Yes. Canon names belong to Square Enix's characters, so treat them as references, but the original names here are free to use for fan fiction, OCs, tabletop characters or a Dragon Quest-inspired setting of your own.
