Generate quest names that sound like they belong in a journal: main-story titles like A Crown Without a King, side quests like The Miller's Missing Daughter, bounty and heist boards, fetch-quest jokes, and chapter-style headings for D&D, video games and interactive fiction.

About quest names

A quest name is the first thing a player reads in their journal, so the best ones do two jobs at once: they tell you what kind of task this is, and they promise a story. Game designers lean on a handful of reliable shapes. Short noun phrases (The Hollow Crown, Salt in the Wound) suit main-plot chapters. Possessives and people (The Widow's Lantern, A Cure for Lord Hallam) signal a character-driven side quest. Imperatives (Light the Beacons, Bring Me the Head of Gorrum Vane) read like orders from a quest-giver. Questions and 'What Lies Beneath...' openers hint at mystery, while 'Wanted:', 'Bounty:' and 'Heist:' prefixes mimic a job board.

Tone matters as much as shape. Skyrim's quests are terse and grave (Unbound, Season Unending); World of Warcraft happily names a quest Goretusk Liver Pie; Dragon Age and The Witcher go for folk-ballad titles with a twist. Mixing registers is fine as long as each questline stays consistent; puns belong on optional content, never on the finale.

This list covers all of those modes, from chapter titles and single-word hooks like Reckoning and Undertow to fetch-quest humour, local trouble (Murder at Mistfall Manor) and typed board entries, so you can name a whole campaign without repeating a structure.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Name the quest after the hook, not the task: 'The Miller's Missing Daughter' beats 'Rescue Mission', and 'Who Poisoned the Well?' beats 'Investigate the Well'. Players remember a story, not a verb.
  • Keep main-story titles short and weighty (two to four words) and let side quests be longer, sillier or more specific so the journal's hierarchy is visible at a glance.
  • Use one structure per questline for cohesion: a thieves' guild chain might all be heist titles (The Starling Job, The Sapphire Heist) while a village arc uses 'Trouble at...' or local names.
  • Let the name change meaning after the twist. 'A Wolf at the Door' or 'The Good Shepherd' works because the player reads it differently once they know who the villain is.
  • For tabletop, write the quest name on the session handout or in the players' notes; a named quest feels like a contract and gives the table a shared shorthand for what they are doing.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good quest name?

It should be short enough to fit a journal entry, hint at the story or the stakes rather than the mechanics, and match the tone of the questline. 'Three Coins for the Ferryman' tells you there is a cost, a river and a bargain; 'Talk to the Ferryman' tells you nothing you did not already know.

How do side quest names differ from main quest names?

Main quest names tend to be brief and serious, like chapter titles: Unbound, The Ashen Road, A Crown Without a King. Side quests can be longer, more specific and funnier, such as Granny's Goats or The Great Turnip Heist, because they are optional and often comic relief.

Can I use these quest names for D&D or other tabletop games?

Yes. Many of the titles were written with tabletop in mind, and a named quest helps a D&D party remember what they agreed to do. Use the bounty-board style entries (Wanted, Bounty, Contract) for notice boards in town and the story-style titles for your campaign's arcs.

Are there funny quest names for MMO-style fetch quests?

Yes. The list includes deliberately silly entries such as Kill Ten Boars, Goose on the Loose, Hold My Ale, Catch That Chicken and Daily: Rats, Again, which parody the genre's fetch and kill quests while still being usable in a real game.
