Generate names for draft horses and the teams they work in: plain farm names like Barney, Queenie and Big Ben, matched pairs like Pete and Repeat and Duke and Duchess, and full hitch sets such as Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

About draft horse names

Draft horses are named the way they work: plainly, and often two at a time. A teamster calls a horse by name all day, so the old farm names are short and carry across a field: Dan, Bill, Kate, Maude, Nell. A team is often named as a pair, and that is where this list of 1,000 puts its weight. Nearly half of the entries are matched pairs such as Pete and Repeat, Duke and Duchess and Salt and Pepper, or whole sets for a hitch of four, six or eight.

In a pair, the near horse stands on the left and the off horse on the right, as the driver sees them. In a bigger hitch the wheelers are the pair closest to the wagon and the leaders are the pair in front; a six adds a swing pair between them. Gee means turn right and haw means turn left, which is why Gee and Haw is on the list.

The single names run from gentle giants (Goliath, Moose, Tiny) to coat and feather names (Sorrel, Dapple, Feathers) and work words (Teamster, Furrow, Singletree). Four small blocks nod to the breeds' homes: Scottish names for Clydesdales, names from Le Perche for Percherons, Flemish names for Belgians and English names for Shires and Suffolk Punches.

How to choose draft horse names

  • Say a pair out loud before you settle on it. Rhymes like Dolly and Molly look good on a stall sign, but in harness two names that sound different, such as Doc and Chub or Molly and Bird, are easier for each horse to pick out.
  • Keep the working name to one or two syllables. Samson and Delilah can go on the wagon while the horses answer to Sam and Lila in the field.
  • Decide which name goes on which side and keep it that way. With Gee and Haw, give Gee to the off horse on the right and Haw to the near horse on the left, the way each command turns the team.
  • For a hitch, hand out a set by position. The biggest pair usually goes at the wheel, next to the wagon, and the showiest pair leads, so with Matthew, Mark, Luke and John you might put Matthew and Mark at the wheel.
  • Match a heritage name to the breed if you like the link: Hamish or Lanark for a Clydesdale, Gaston or Mortagne for a Percheron, Jef or Brabant for a Belgian, Smiler or Woodbridge for a Suffolk Punch.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a team of draft horses?

Matched pairs are the tradition: Tom and Jerry, Pete and Repeat, Duke and Duchess, Salt and Pepper, Thunder and Lightning. Two plain farm names work just as well, such as Bob and Tom or Maude and Belle. For a four-horse hitch try Matthew, Mark, Luke and John or North, South, East and West.

What do near horse and off horse mean?

The near horse is the one on the left of a pair and the off horse is the one on the right, seen from behind as the driver sees them. In a larger hitch the wheelers are the pair nearest the wagon and the leaders are the pair at the front, with a swing pair between them in a six-horse hitch.

What are classic names for a single draft horse?

Short farm names such as Dan, Bill, Bob, Kate, Maude and Nell, and friendly old ones such as Barney, Queenie and Dobbin. Size names are common too, both straight (Goliath, Samson, Titan) and upside down (Tiny, Peanut, Half Pint).

Are there names for specific draft breeds?

Yes, in four small blocks. There are Scottish names for Clydesdales (Angus, Morag, Tinto), names from Le Perche in France for Percherons (Marcel, Margot, Mortagne), Flemish names for Belgians (Joris, Griet, Tienen) and English names for Shires and Suffolk Punches (Wilfred, Blossom, Lavenham). Coat names such as Sorrel, Flaxen and Feathers suit any of them, and feather is the long hair on the lower legs of a Clydesdale or a Shire.
