About denobulan names
Denobulans, the species of Doctor Phlox from Star Trek: Enterprise, use a single name with no family name attached, which fits a culture where a person may have three spouses who each have three spouses of their own. Every Denobulan seen on screen follows the pattern: Phlox, his wife Feezal, his sons Mettus and Tullis, and the geologists Zepht, Trevix and Yolen from the episode The Breach. The names are short, usually one or two syllables, and lean on hard consonant clusters (phl, tr, zp, ks) with clipped endings in -x, -s, -t, -l and -n.
What makes a Denobulan name sound right is that clipped, slightly comic briskness, Phlox's own tone: cheerful, quick and practical. Avoid the long liquid vowels of Vulcan or Betazoid names and the harsh guttural apostrophes of Klingon. A Denobulan name should feel like it could be said with a wide grin, and it should never need a hyphen or a diacritic.
The list starts with the canon names from Enterprise and the tie-in novels, then adds original names that keep the same phonology: one-syllable names like Vrax and Plesk, two-syllable names like Brennox, Tavrel and Oleesa, and a handful of longer names for elders and officials. Use them for Starfleet medical officers, Medical Exchange staff, or the large families Denobulan stories tend to need.
Tips for choosing a name
- Keep it to one name. Denobulans do not use surnames on screen, so if your character needs a distinguishing label use a title or posting (Doctor, Commander, of the Medical Exchange) rather than inventing a family name.
- Aim for one or two syllables with a hard stop at the end: -x, -k, -t, -s or -l. Phlox, Zepht and Trevix are the template; anything longer than three syllables starts to sound like a different species.
- Denobulan family trees are huge (three wives, each with three husbands, plus many children), so pick several names that sound distinct from each other when you build a household. Mixing one-syllable and two-syllable names helps readers keep them apart.
- Softer endings in -a, -een or -eel (Vesena, Kaveen, Vaneel) read as feminine in the canon, but the species does not enforce gendered names, so feel free to ignore that pattern for an original character.
- For a Denobulan serving in Starfleet or the Interspecies Medical Exchange, pair the name with a specialty in your notes (exobiologist, hibernation physiologist, geologist); the name itself stays plain.
Frequently asked questions
Do Denobulans have last names in Star Trek?
No. Every Denobulan named in canon, including Phlox, Feezal, Mettus, Tullis, Zepht, Trevix and Yolen, goes by a single name. Given that a Denobulan can have three spouses who each have three spouses of their own, a shared family name would not mean much, so the species simply does not use them.
What do Denobulan names sound like?
Short and clipped, with consonant clusters and a hard final sound: Phlox, Zepht, Trevix. Most are one or two syllables and avoid apostrophes, hyphens and diacritics, which makes them easy to say out loud at a gaming table.
Which Denobulan names are canon?
From Star Trek: Enterprise: Phlox, his wife Feezal, his sons Mettus and Tullis, and the geologists Zepht, Trevix and Yolen. Names such as Vaneel, Forbin, Vesena, Kessil and Rebnok come from Phlox's extended family as described in the series and the licensed novels. Everything else in this list is original and built to match.
Can I use these names for Star Trek Adventures or Star Trek Online?
Yes. They work for Denobulan player characters in the Star Trek Adventures tabletop RPG, Star Trek Online captains and bridge officers, fan fiction set in the Enterprise era or later, and any original sci-fi species that wants a brisk, cheerful-sounding naming style.
