Archer Name Generator

Archers have been named for their craft longer than almost any other fighter. The English surnames Archer, Bowyer, Fletcher, Stringer and Arrowsmith all began as job titles in the medieval bow trade, and Welsh longbowmen at Crecy and Agincourt carried patronymic names like Owain ap Gruffydd. Legend gave archers epithets instead: Robin of Locksley, Clym of the Clough, Egil One-Hand, Yi the Archer who shot down nine suns, Nasu no Yoichi who hit a fan on a moving ship. A modern nickname like Deadeye or Hawkeye is the same idea in plainer language.

In fantasy, the archer archetype splits several ways and each deserves its own sound. Elven bow-singers get liquid, vowel-heavy names with a compound surname (Aelindra Silverfletch, Ithilwen Starstrike). Northern hunters get blunt Norse-style names (Astrid Ironstring, Bjorn Threearrow). Steppe horse archers, Persian and Arab bowmen, and Japanese kyudo masters each have real naming traditions worth borrowing, and this list samples all of them alongside the greenwood outlaw style of Robin Hood's band.

A convincing archer name usually points at one thing: the weapon, the eye, or the reputation. Pick the one your character is proudest of.
