Corn Snake Name Generator
Corn, ember and morph names for pet corn snakes
Find a name for a pet corn snake: corn and maize names like Shucks, Cobbler and Polenta, ember colors like Rust and Vermilion, morph names like Butter and Palmetto, and escape-artist names like Jailbreak and Skeleton Key. The 1,000 names also cover harvest and snack names, hatchlings and pairs such as Husk & Silk.
About corn snake names
A corn snake almost names itself. The red saddles, the checkered belly and the common name all point at the field and the pantry, so the list starts from corn and maize names (Shucks, Cob, Tassel, Nubbin), corn kitchen names (Polenta, Hominy, Hushpuppy, Johnnycake) and harvest names (Bumper Crop, Scarecrow, Husking Bee). Two explanations are usually given for the common name: the snakes hunted mice around corn cribs, and the belly pattern looks like kernels of multicolored maize. Barn Boss, Crib Keeper and Checkerboard come from those stories, and Red Rat Snake is the animal's other common name.
Color is the second source. A wild-type corn snake is orange to reddish brown with darker red saddles, which gives Vermilion, Carnelian, Smolder and Kindling. Breeders have also produced dozens of color and pattern morphs whose trade names work as pet names: Butter, Palmetto, Sunglow, Bloodred, Tessera and Lava are here, with nicknames such as Tessie and Amelie.
The rest follows the animal's habits and home. Corn snakes are slim, curious climbers that test every gap in a lid, hence Jailbreak, Skeleton Key and Last Seen Tuesday. They are native to the southeastern United States, hence Savannah, Edisto and Longleaf. There are also hatchling names like Pip and Pencil Lead, snack names like Sunkist, titles such as Sir Shucks-a-Lot, and pairs.
How to choose corn snake names
- Start with what you can see. A classic orange snake suits Rust, Vermilion or Kindling, and a pale snow animal suits Kettle Corn, Cornstarch or Spoonbread.
- If your snake is a named morph, try the trade name or a nickname from it. Palmetto, Tessera and Lava work as they are, and Tessie, Amelie and Lava Girl are friendlier at home.
- Corn snakes are known for finding gaps in a lid. If yours has already turned up behind the bookshelf once, Jailbreak, Flight Risk, Gone Again or Lid Check fit, and they remind you to check the clips.
- A hatchling name does not have to change. Pip, Sprout, Pencil Lead and Half Pint fit a snake the width of a pencil, and on a four-foot adult the contrast becomes the joke.
- For two snakes, pick from the pairs, which are meant to be said together: Husk & Silk, Salt & Butter, Flint & Tinder or Lock & Key. Most keepers house corn snakes one to a tank, so a pair name can run across two enclosures.
Frequently asked questions
What are some cool corn snake names?
The cooler names in the list lean on fire, color and attitude: Smolder, Vermilion, Carnelian, Cinnabar, Backdraft, Antares, Spearhead and Phantom. Morph names such as Bloodred, Lava, Plasma and Avalanche sound sharp too, and they tell other keepers something about the snake.
Why are they called corn snakes, and is that where the corn names come from?
Two explanations are usually given. One is that the snakes were often found around corn cribs and grain stores, where they hunted mice and rats, and the other is that the checkered belly resembles kernels of multicolored maize. Either way the name invites Shucks, Cob, Polenta and Cornbread, and it is why the list also has barn names like Mouser and Crib Keeper.
Can I use a morph name as a pet name?
Yes, and many keepers do. The list includes trade names used for corn snake morphs, among them Butter, Snow, Palmetto, Tessera, Sunkissed, Caramel and Kastanie, plus nicknames built on them such as Tessie and Motley Crew. A morph name only makes sense on a snake that is that morph, so check what yours was sold as before you pick one.
How is the corn snake name list organized?
The 1,000 names are mixed together, so each batch draws from several styles: corn and maize wordplay, corn dishes, ember and red colors, morph names, harvest and farm names, snacks, escape-artist names, hatchling names, pairs, places and plants of the Southeast, barn and climbing names, pattern names, autumn and orange foods, titles, and sunset and flower names. A few, such as Guttata and Pantherophis, come from the scientific names the species has carried.
