Chameleon Name Generator
Colorful and funny names for pet chameleons
Find a name for a pet chameleon: color and light names like Hue, Prism and Chroma, hiding jokes like Incognito and Sir Blends-a-Lot, eye and tongue names like Periscope and Zap, and Madagascar locale names like Ambilobe and Nosy Be.
About chameleon names
A chameleon gives you more to name than most reptiles do. The skin shifts color with mood, temperature and light, so paint and optics words come first: Hue, Tint, Chroma, Pigment, Prism, Spectrum, Kaleidoscope. The eyes sit in turrets that swivel separately, which is where Periscope, Radar and Googly come from. The tongue can reach farther than the body is long (Zap, Slurp, Slingshot), and the slow, rocking walk along a branch suggests Sway, Dawdle and Twig.
About a third of the list is jokes, because hiding is the obvious punchline: Incognito, Now You See Me, Definitely a Leaf, Sir Blends-a-Lot, Comma, Prism Break and Assistant Branch Manager. Three famous film names are here as well: Pascal from Tangled, Rango, and Randall, the color-shifting monster of Monsters, Inc.
The rest follows the species people keep. Veiled chameleons come from Yemen and Saudi Arabia and carry a tall helmet called a casque, so Casque, Veil and Mohawk suit them. Panther chameleons are sold by the Madagascar locale their line comes from, which gives Ambilobe, Ambanja, Nosy Be and Sambava. Male Jackson's chameleons from Kenya and Tanzania have three horns: Triceratops, Tricorn, Trident. A few Swahili and Malagasy words round it out, such as Kinyonga, the Swahili word for chameleon, and Pole Pole, Swahili for slowly.
How to choose chameleon names
- Watch the resting colors for a few days before you choose. A mostly green veiled suits Viridian or Chartreuse, a red-barred panther suits Vermilion or Red Bar, and a blue one suits Cerulean or Blue Bar.
- If you know your panther chameleon's locale, use it. Ambilobe, Ambanja, Nosy Be, Nosy Faly, Sambava and Tamatave are all in the list, and the name tells other keepers something true about the animal.
- Name from the feature you notice first. Turret eyes give Periscope, Radar and Swivel; the tongue gives Zap, Yoink and Slingshot; the curled tail gives Fiddlehead, Corkscrew and Cinnamon Roll.
- Say a joke name out loud a few times before you commit. Sir Blends-a-Lot and Definitely a Leaf are funny on day one, but a short form is what you will end up using.
- A chameleon will not come when called, so pick for the people in the house: a name everyone can say and nobody gets tired of explaining.
Frequently asked questions
What are some funny chameleon names?
The hiding jokes are the classics: Incognito, Now You See Me, Nothing to See Here, Definitely a Leaf and Sir Blends-a-Lot. The list also has puns such as Comma, Prism Break, Hue Dunnit and Casque of Amontillado, and job titles such as Assistant Branch Manager and Chief Mood Officer. About a third of the 1,000 names are jokes.
What are good names for a veiled, panther or Jackson's chameleon?
For a veiled chameleon, names about the tall casque fit: Casque, Veil, Mohawk, Shark Fin or Top Hat. For a panther chameleon, use its Madagascar locale (Ambilobe, Ambanja, Nosy Be, Sambava) or a color name such as Blue Bar. For a Jackson's chameleon the three horns suggest Triceratops, Tricorn, Trident or Tatu, the Swahili word for three.
Are there famous chameleon names in the list?
Three famous film names are included: Pascal, the chameleon in Tangled, Rango, the chameleon hero of the film Rango, and Randall, the color-changing monster in Monsters, Inc. Espio, the chameleon from the Sonic games, is there too. Most of the other names come from color, camouflage, eyes, tongue and habitat rather than from fiction.
Why are there Madagascar and East African place names?
Madagascar is home to about half of the world's chameleon species, so the list uses Malagasy places such as Andasibe, Ranomafana, Masoala and Nosy Be. The East African names (Usambara, Kilimanjaro, Meru, Nairobi) come mostly from Kenya and Tanzania, where Jackson's chameleons and many other species live, with a few from Uganda. Sanaa and Taiz are cities in Yemen and Asir is a region of Saudi Arabia, the two countries where veiled chameleons are native.
