Generate call names for coonhounds and coon dogs of every breed, from Bluetick and Redbone to Plott and Treeing Walker: voice names like Bawler and Chop, hunt words like Strike and Lantern, and timber and river names like Sycamore and Nolichucky.

About coonhound names

A coonhound's name gets used in the dark, at a distance, over the sound of other hounds, so the good ones are short and hard-edged: Tick, Chop, Strike, Jeb. Hunters name what they hear and see. A hound with a long, drawn-out voice on the track is a bawl mouth, one with a short, sharp bark is a chop mouth, and both words make good names.

The six coonhound breeds each bring their own color words. Blueticks get the slate and speckle names, Redbones the clay, cedar and ember names, Black and Tans the coal and saddle names. Treeing Walkers are tricolored, English coonhounds are often redticked, and Plotts, the brindle bear dogs of the North Carolina mountains, suit stripe and stone names.

This list of 1,000 names mixes those with the language of the hunt (Cold Nose, Slick Tree, First Strike), raccoons and other creek-bank animals, hardwood trees, real ridges and rivers of coonhound country from the Clinch to the Current River, moon and frost names, and longer registered-style names that put a creek or ridge in front of the call name, like Clinch River Bawler. Four come from novels: Old Dan and Little Ann from Where the Red Fern Grows, Sounder, and Savage Sam.

How to choose coonhound names

  • Test the name the way you will use it: shout it across the yard after dark. One or two syllables with a hard consonant, like Tick, Chop, Tuff or Bawler, carry through timber far better than a soft three-syllable name.
  • Keep kennelmates sounding different. Hounds that are turned loose together need names you can tell apart at a distance: Tick and Slim work side by side, Zeb and Jeb do not.
  • Name the coat by breed. Blue Smoke or Dungaree suits a Bluetick, Red Clay or Fat Lighter a Redbone, Coal Dust or Pumpkin Seed a Black and Tan, and Brindle or Tiger Stripe a Plott.
  • Use a long name on paper and a short one in the woods. Tug Fork Thunder or Hickory Flat Hammer reads well on a pedigree, and the last word is what you call at the tree.
  • Let a pup earn a voice name. Wait until you have heard it open on a track before you settle on Bawler, Chop Mouth or Squaller, so the name tells the truth.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a coonhound?

Short names that describe the hound are the tradition: its voice (Bawler, Chop, Foghorn), its coat (Tick, Redbone, Brindle) or its work (Strike, Cold Nose, Locate). Timber and water names such as Sycamore, Shagbark, Tellico and Tug Fork also suit a dog that spends its nights in creek bottoms.

What do bawl and chop mean in coonhound names?

They describe the voice. A bawl is a long, drawn-out note and a chop is a short, sharp bark, and many coonhounds bawl on the track and switch to a steady chop once the raccoon is treed. That is where names like Long Bawl, Short Chop, Hard Chop and Bawl Mouth come from.

Are any of these coon dog names from books?

Four of them. Old Dan and Little Ann are the Redbone coonhounds in Where the Red Fern Grows, Sounder is the coonhound cross in the novel of the same name, and Savage Sam is the Bluetick in Fred Gipson's sequel to Old Yeller. The rest of the list was not drawn from books, though plain names such as Big Red also turn up in dog stories, and Red Fern is a nod to the first title.

Do these names work for a coonhound that never hunts?

Yes. Color, tree and river names fit any coonhound, and a few are written for the dog that sleeps more than it trails: Porch Dog, Napper, Couch Hound and Quilt Thief. A voice name still fits, because a pet coonhound bawls at squirrels and delivery trucks just as loudly.
