Find a call name for a retriever, pointer, setter, spaniel or hound: waterfowl names like Teal, Pintail and Gadwall, upland names like Covey and Chukar, cover names like Briar and Slough, field words like Decoy and Buckshot, and short whistle names like Tess and Jet.

About hunting dog names

A working dog's name is a tool. Trainers generally advise one or two syllables with a clear vowel, because a short name carries across a marsh or a stubble field and is quick to say before a command. It should not sound like a command either: a name that rhymes with sit, whoa, no or here makes the dog guess. These are call names for everyday use, not registered kennel names.

The list is built from the places and birds a dog works. Duck dogs get waterfowl names, from Mallard, Pintail and Gadwall to hunters' nicknames such as Sprig, Spoonie, Bluebill and Honker. Upland dogs get Quail, Chukar, Bobwhite, Covey and Timberdoodle, an old name for the woodcock. Habitat supplies Slough, Cattail, Oxbow, Briar, Wiregrass and Thicket, and the gear bag supplies Decoy, Lanyard, Buckshot, Jonboat and Bumper.

Other groups name the job itself (Pointer, Flusher, Quest, Huntress), big game and mountain country (Antler, Wapiti, Sawtooth, Bitterroot), and a porch full of Southern hound names such as Boone, Maybelle and Old Blue. The last group is the shortest: one-syllable whistle names like Tess, Jet, Meg, Fly and Rip, the kind long favored for working dogs. Every group has names for females as well, among them Teal, Dove, Prairie, Velvet, Skadi and Nell.

How to choose hunting dog names

  • Stand at one end of a field and call the name the way you would on a windy morning. Names with a hard first consonant and a clear vowel, such as Teal, Drake, Kodiak and Tess, cut through wind and water noise.
  • Test the name against your commands before you commit. Kit can blur into sit and Beau into no or whoa, so say the name and the cue one after the other and listen for a clash.
  • Match the name to the work. A duck dog suits Gadwall, Reelfoot or Decoy, a pointer or setter suits Covey, Bobwhite or Wiregrass, and a hound suits Boone, Sounder or Old Dan.
  • If you love a long name, shorten it for the field. Timberdoodle becomes Doodle, Specklebelly becomes Speck and Mattamuskeet becomes Mattie.
  • With two dogs in the blind or the truck, pick names that start with different sounds, such as Teal and Briar, so each dog knows which one is being sent.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a duck dog?

Waterfowl names are the tradition: Drake, Teal, Mallard, Pintail, Gadwall, Widgeon and Brant are all in the list, along with hunters' nicknames such as Sprig for a pintail, Spoonie for a shoveler and Honker for a Canada goose. Marsh and gear words work just as well, for example Slough, Cattail, Decoy, Highball and Jonboat.

What are good bird dog names for upland hunting?

Look to the birds and the cover. Covey, Bevy, Quail, Chukar, Grouse, Bobwhite, Ruff and Ringneck come from the game, while Briar, Thicket, Fencerow, Broomsedge and Wiregrass come from the ground a pointer, setter or spaniel works. Flush, Point and Staunch name the job itself.

What are some cool names for a female hunting dog?

Teal, Dove, Briar, Prairie, Tupelo, Velvet, Sika and Cascade all read as female without losing the field feel. Huntresses from myth work too: Diana, Artemis, Atalanta and Skadi are in the list, as are short whistle names such as Tess, Jess, Meg, Nell and Bess.

Should a hunting dog have a short name?

Most trainers say yes. One or two syllables are quick to say before a command and easy for the dog to pick out at a distance, which is why names like Ace, Jet, Rip, Fly and Tuck are common in field work. A longer name such as Canvasback or Timberline is fine if you settle on a short form for the field.
