Generate coast names the way real coastlines are named: after cargo and colour (Gold Coast, Côte d'Azur), danger (Skeleton Coast, Costa da Morte), wildlife, saints and sailors. English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Norse, Welsh and invented styles for fantasy maps and worldbuilding.

About coast names

Real coasts are named by the people who sailed past them, and the names fall into a few patterns. Traders named stretches after what they loaded there: the Gold Coast, the Ivory Coast, the Pepper Coast, the Amber Coast of the Baltic. Sailors named them for danger: the Skeleton Coast, Costa da Morte (the Coast of Death), the Côte Sauvage. Tourist boards named them for colour and light: Costa Brava, Côte d'Azur, the Sunshine Coast, the Emerald Coast. Geologists gave us the Jurassic Coast and the Causeway Coast, and older peoples named shores for who lived there, which is where the Swahili, Coromandel and Malabar coasts come from.

The form-word carries as much flavour as the descriptor. English has Coast, Shore, Strand, Seaboard and Reach; Spanish and Portuguese use Costa; French Côte; Italian Costiera and Riviera; German Küste; Scandinavian kyst and strönd; Welsh arfordir and traeth; Irish cósta, trá and cladach. A fantasy map feels real when coast names reflect who charted it, so a coast called Hrafnströnd by raiders and the Raven Coast by settlers tells a story on its own.

This list mixes cargo and colour names, hazard names, saints and admirals, wildlife, lost-land legends, Romance-language forms, Norse and Celtic forms, and invented proper-noun coasts such as Varnmouth Shore and Penhallow Coast.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide who named the coast in-world: a trader picks a cargo (the Tin Coast), a sailor picks a hazard (the Wreckers' Coast), a priest picks a saint (Saint Brendan's Shore), a king picks himself (King Aelric's Shore).
  • Match the form-word to the geography: Strand for long sandy shores, Reach for a stretch seen from a ship, Seaboard for a whole region of ports, Shore for something intimate, Coast for anything large.
  • Use a Romance or Norse form when the coast sits in a region with that culture, and give the same coast an English translation; Costa del Silencio and the Silent Coast on one map imply a history of conquest.
  • Name the coast for a single vivid thing, not a pile of adjectives: the Coast of Drowned Bells beats the Dark Stormy Cursed Coast every time.
  • Keep real names (Costa Brava, Côte d'Azur, the Skeleton Coast) as reference only if your setting is our world; for original worlds, borrow the pattern, not the name.

Frequently asked questions

How are real coasts named?

Most real coast names come from trade goods (Gold Coast, Ivory Coast, Amber Coast), danger (Skeleton Coast, Costa da Morte), colour or light (Côte d'Azur, Costa Brava, Costa de la Luz), geology (Jurassic Coast, Causeway Coast) or the people and animals found there (Swahili Coast, Seal Coast). A few are named for saints, explorers or events.

What is the difference between a coast, a shore and a strand?

A coast is the whole region where land meets sea, often hundreds of miles long. A shore is the immediate edge, the part you can stand on. A strand is specifically a sandy or shingly beach-shore, common in Irish, Scandinavian and older English place names. Seaboard usually means a coastal region with its ports, and Reach is a stretch of coast as seen from the water.

Can I use these names for a D&D or fantasy map?

Yes. The English, Norse-style and invented names (Varnmouth Shore, the Coast of Drowned Bells, Hrafnströnd) drop straight into a homebrew world. The Spanish, French and Italian forms suit settings with a Mediterranean or colonial flavour. Real names such as Costa Brava are included to show the patterns and should be adapted rather than copied.

Should a fantasy coast have one name or several?

Several, if you want depth. Real coasts carry different names in different languages and eras (the Pepper Coast became the Grain Coast, the Slave Coast became the Bight of Benin). Give the coast a native name, a sailors' nickname and an official name, and let characters reveal which one they use.
