About Ivorian names
Côte d'Ivoire, the Ivory Coast of English usage, asks to be called by its French name in every language, and its names are written the French way. The Akan day names that Ghana spells Kwasi, Kofi and Akosua appear here as Kouassi, Koffi and Akissi. Among the Baoulé and Agni a child is named for the weekday of its birth, with one form for boys (Kouassi, Kouadio, Konan, Kouakou, Yao, Koffi, Kouamé) and one for girls (Akissi, Adjoua, Amenan, Ahou, Aya, Affoué, Amoin). Others, such as N'Guessan and N'Dri, mark birth order. All of them also serve as family names, which is why Yao Kouakou reads like two given names.
Other traditions fill the rest. Krou names of the west (Bété, Dida, Wè) include Gnahoré, Digbeu, Djédjé and Tapé. The lagoon peoples around Abidjan give Yapi, Yapo, Séka and Mobio. Senoufo names of the north include Soro, Silué, Yéo and Tuo, and Mande or Dioula families carry Ouattara, Bamba, Kamagaté and Soumahoro with given names like Vamoussa, Lanciné and Salimata. Gouro names use Bi for a son and Lou for a daughter.
French given names are common in official use, often compound and often followed by a local one, as in Sylvie Amoin Kouamé. The list puts the family name last; Ivorian paperwork often puts it first.
How to choose Ivorian names
- Keep the French spellings. Kouassi, Koffi, Kouamé and Akissi are Ivorian; Kwasi, Kofi, Kwame and Akosua are the English spellings of Ghana and place a character on the other side of the border.
- Keep a name inside one tradition unless the story says otherwise: a Senoufo given name such as Navigué or Ténéna goes with Soro, Silué, Yéo or Tuo, and a day name such as Amenan goes with an Akan family name.
- For a modern or official character put a French given name in front of the local one, as in Thierry Konan N'Guessan. In the village the same man may simply be Konan.
- On an identity card or a class list the family name usually comes first, so Thierry Konan N'Guessan may be written N'Guessan Konan Thierry. Decide which order your setting uses and keep to it.
- Search a full name before you publish it. Common pairs are shared by many real people, public figures among them.
Frequently asked questions
Are Ivorian names and Ivory Coast names the same thing?
Yes. Ivorian is the English adjective for Côte d'Ivoire, the country that English speakers have long called Ivory Coast. The government asks that the French name be used in every language, so you will see both. This list covers the whole country, from Akan names in the center and east to Krou, Senoufo and Mande names.
What are common Ivorian last names?
Among Akan families Kouassi, Kouadio, Konan, Kouamé, Koffi, Yao and N'Guessan are everywhere. In the north you meet Ouattara, Coulibaly, Koné, Soro and Yéo, in the west Gnahoré, Tapé and Djédjé, and near Abidjan Yapi, Yapo and N'Cho. All of them are in the list.
How do Ivorian day names differ from Ghanaian ones?
The idea is the same, a name for the weekday of birth, but the forms and spellings differ: Kouassi, Koffi and Kouamé for Kwasi, Kofi and Kwame, and Akissi, Adjoua and Affoué for girls. The weekday attached to a name is not always the same on both sides of the border, so check the tradition you are writing about.
Do these names belong to real people?
The list pairs given names used in Côte d'Ivoire with family names found there. It is not taken from any register, and no combination is meant to point to a particular person, although with names this common a match can happen by chance.
