Generate Civil War unit names in the forms the period used: nickname brigades like Granite Brigade and Tidewater Brigade, commander's brigades, cavalry, batteries, zouaves and town companies such as Prairie Rifles. One name in ten is a real unit, marked (Union) or (Confederate); the rest are invented.

About Civil War Brigade names

Civil War units were named in three ways. On paper a Union brigade was a number inside a division and a corps, while a Confederate brigade usually went by its commander, as in Kershaw's Brigade or Hood's Texas Brigade. The regiments inside it were raised by the states and numbered in order, such as the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry or the 26th North Carolina Infantry. And the names soldiers actually used were nicknames: Iron Brigade, Irish Brigade, Stonewall Brigade, Orphan Brigade.

Below the regiment sat the companies, raised in a single town or county and often carrying a local name long after the army gave them a letter: Clinch Rifles, Raccoon Roughs, University Greys. Batteries, legions that combined infantry, cavalry and artillery, zouaves in North African style uniforms and sharpshooters added more forms. From 1863 the Union army also organized Black regiments as United States Colored Troops, listed here under their period designations.

This list mixes both kinds of name. One hundred entries, fifty from each side, are real units and end in (Union) or (Confederate). The other nine hundred are invented in the same forms, with no side marked and no regimental number, because nearly every numbered state regiment really existed: Granite Brigade, Thornbury's Brigade, Ashby Creek Light Artillery, Red Fez Zouaves, Cedar Hollow Home Guard.

How to choose Civil War Brigade names

  • For a brigade a wargame lets you name, follow the period habit: a commander's name such as Halloway's Brigade or Tolliver's Brigade fits a Confederate command best, because that army named its brigades that way, while a nickname such as Granite Brigade or Whetstone Brigade works for either side.
  • Keep the size words straight. On paper a company was about a hundred men, a regiment was ten companies, a brigade was several regiments, and a battery was four to six guns.
  • Entries marked (Union) or (Confederate) are real units, so read up on one before you use it: a real regiment comes with real battles, losses and descendants. The Black regiments in the list, such as the 54th Massachusetts Infantry and the 5th United States Colored Infantry, are all real and keep their period designations.
  • For a reenactment impression or a classroom project that needs an invented unit, take a local company name such as Mill Creek Grays and give it a home county of your own instead of a regimental number.
  • An unmarked name has no fixed side. Drop Stone Bridge Light Artillery or Bluegrass Dragoons into either army and add the state your story needs. A few forms lean one way: Partisan Rangers, Senior Reserves and Junior Reserves were Confederate classes of troops, and Enrolled Militia and Emergency Militia were Union ones.

Frequently asked questions

Are the units in this list real?

One in ten is. The hundred names that end in (Union) or (Confederate), such as Iron Brigade (Union), 54th Massachusetts Infantry (Union), Stonewall Brigade (Confederate) and Hampton Legion (Confederate), are real units of that side. Every name without a label is invented in a period form. So many local companies were raised that an invented name may match a real one somewhere by coincidence, so look a name up before you treat it as history.

Why do the invented regiments have no numbers?

The states numbered their regiments in order, so almost any number and state you pick, a 3rd Ohio or a 12th Georgia, belonged to a real regiment with a real record. Inventing one would hang fiction on a real unit's name. The invented infantry here use local names instead, such as Kennebec Valley Volunteer Infantry or Cedar County Regiment.

How were brigades named in the Civil War?

Officially, Union brigades were numbered within their division and corps, and Confederate brigades were usually known by the commander's name. Nicknames grew on top of that, from a home state (Vermont Brigade), the men's heritage (Irish Brigade) or a reputation earned in battle (Iron Brigade, Stonewall Brigade).

What is a legion, a zouave regiment or a home guard?

A legion was a single command that combined infantry, cavalry and artillery, as Hampton Legion did when it was raised. Zouaves copied the baggy trousers, short jackets and fezzes of French North African troops, which is the look behind a name like Red Fez Zouaves. Home guards and reserves were local defense units, often of older men and boys, such as the invented Cedar Hollow Home Guard.
