Generate invented character names for the American War of Independence, 1775 to 1783: Continental soldiers like Sergeant Amos Pettingill, militia like Minuteman Nathan Brigham, British regulars like Serjeant William Garside, German auxiliaries like Grenadier Heinrich Ruppert, French officers like Capitaine Louis de Saint-Hilaire and civilians like Widow Mehitable Sprague.

About Revolutionary war names

The American War of Independence ran from 1775 to 1783 and was never a contest of two armies. Every entry here carries a rank, a role or a side, so one click can give you a Continental private, a minuteman, a British serjeant, a Loyalist ranger, a German grenadier, a French naval officer, a camp nurse or the plain alias of a spy.

The ranks follow each army's own usage. Continental regiments were raised by the states, and the regiments of one state were called its Line, as in Captain Jedediah Hawley of the Connecticut Line. An artillery private was a matross, the junior officer of infantry an ensign and of cavalry a cornet. British and Loyalist entries use the period spelling serjeant. German auxiliaries came from six states, most of them from Hesse-Cassel, and carry German ranks such as Musketier, Jäger and Hauptmann. French soldiers often served under a nickname, shown with dit, as in Soldat Jean Mercier dit La Violette.

Every name is invented. Given names and surnames of the period were paired with ranks, and no entry is taken from a muster roll, pension file or crew list. Generals, signers and the famous spies are left out on purpose, and the page cannot help you trace an ancestor.

How to choose Revolutionary war names

  • Let the rank place the character. Matross Ichabod Bisbee serves a cannon, Rifleman Drury Pulliam is a backcountry marksman and Sapper Darius Gilmore digs siege works, so the title does a line of description for you.
  • Keep neighbors together. Militia and minute companies were raised town by town, so a company sounds right with surnames from one region: Brigham, Hapgood and Houghton for Massachusetts, or Hasbrouck, Elmendorf and Dumond for the Hudson Valley.
  • Remember that both sides shared the same names. A Loyalist such as Captain Josiah Wetmore of a provincial corps and a militia officer such as Captain Roger Buell of the Connecticut militia could be cousins, and that is often the story.
  • Use the foreign ranks as written. Jäger Valentin Schwalm is a German rifleman, a Fähnrich is the German ensign, and Enseigne de vaisseau Yves de Coatrieux is a junior French naval officer. Left untranslated, they keep the period feel.
  • Search a full name with its rank before you publish. Muster rolls and pension files of this war are widely indexed online, and an ordinary name can match a real soldier by chance.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real soldiers of the Revolutionary War?

No. Every entry is an invented character. The list was drafted by pairing given names and surnames of the period with ranks of each army, not by copying a muster roll, pension file or crew list. An ordinary name can still match a real person by coincidence, so the page is no help for family history, and you should search a name before you publish it.

Which armies and sides are in the list?

Continental regulars by state line, militia and minute companies, British regulars and Royal Navy men, Loyalist provincials, German auxiliaries, the French army and fleet, and the Continental Navy with privateer crews. Examples are Lieutenant Phineas Bidwell of the Connecticut Line, Minuteman Jonas Wheeler, Piper Roderick MacCrimmon of a Highland regiment, Ranger Hendrick Bowman of a Loyalist ranger company and Privateersman Amos Dolliber. Black soldiers and sailors, who served on both sides, appear with the same ranks as everyone else, as in Fifer Cuffee Niles. Women such as Nurse Thankful Kingsley of the Continental hospital and a set of invented spy aliases are here too.

What do the German and French ranks mean?

Musketier, Füsilier and Grenadier are private soldiers of the German infantry, a Jäger is a rifleman, a Feldwebel a senior sergeant, a Hauptmann a captain and a Feldscher a field surgeon. German ranks are given in modern German spelling. On the French side Soldat, Fusilier and Chasseur are privates, a Caporal is a corporal, a Capitaine a captain, a Matelot a sailor and a Mousse a ship's boy. A Tambour is a drummer in both armies, and because Hessian regiments also enlisted Black drummers in America, one Tambour here has an English name.

How is this different from the Colonial American name generator?

That page lists civilians of the colonies up to 1776 with no rank or side. This one covers the war years 1775 to 1783, and every entry has a rank, a unit, a side or a wartime role, including British, Loyalist, German and French characters that a colonial list does not have. Use the colonial page for a town's families and this page for the people the war put in motion.
