Dog names borrowed from real cities and towns around the world, not names for dogs that live downtown: Austin, Brooklyn, Laramie, Galway, Siena, Kyoto, Nairobi, Lima, Troy and Oslo. Each is one or two words and easy to call across a park.

About city dog names

A city name does on a dog what it does on a map: it is short, it is easy to tell from the names around it, and it carries a story. These are the names of real cities and towns borrowed for dogs, not names for dogs that live in town, and each is one or two words that will carry across a park. Two syllables with an open vowel at the end travel best, which is why Rio, Cairo, Oslo, Lima and Reno work so well.

The list moves between ten kinds of place. There are big American cities (Austin, Dallas, Memphis), Western towns with a country sound (Laramie, Abilene, Tulsa), Canadian and Australian places (Banff, Jasper, Darwin), British and Irish towns (Bristol, Galway, Dingle), European capitals and old towns (Vienna, Siena, Lucca), Latin American cities (Lima, Bogota, Havana), African and Middle Eastern cities (Nairobi, Zanzibar, Dubai), Asian cities (Seoul, Kobe, Jaipur), ancient cities (Troy, Sparta, Carthage) and names of four letters or fewer (Bern, Ojai, Vik).

Names are spelled the usual English way, without accent marks. Plenty double as given names, so Charlotte, Adelaide, Florence, Jackson and Logan read as a name first and a place second.

How to choose city dog names

  • Call it out loud before you decide. Short names with a clear vowel at the end, such as Rio, Oslo, Cairo and Tulsa, carry a long way; a longer pick like Albuquerque or Kalgoorlie will need a short call name for everyday use.
  • Keep clear of names that sound like commands. Nome sits close to 'no', Bray rhymes with 'stay' and Split sounds a lot like 'sit'.
  • Choose a place that means something to you: the town where you grew up, the city where you met the dog, a trip you still talk about. It gives you an answer when someone at the park asks about the name.
  • Match the sound to the dog. Denver, Boulder, Kodiak, Bismarck and Sparta have weight for a big dog, while Lucca, Capri, Tofino, Nice and Ojai sit lightly on a small one.
  • Look the place up before the name goes on a tag, and learn how locals say it. Cobh is said 'cove', Ojai is 'oh-hi' and Gloucester is 'gloster'.

Frequently asked questions

What cities make good dog names?

Short city names with clear syllables and a strong first sound tend to work, because a dog picks them out easily. Austin, Dallas, Memphis, Brooklyn, Savannah, Vienna, Galway, Kyoto and Troy are all in the list. Names that end in an open vowel, like Rio, Cairo, Oslo and Lima, are the easiest to call across a field.

Are these names for dogs that live in the city?

No. Every entry is the name of a city, town or borough used as a dog name, from Bronx and Boston to Banff and Zanzibar. A farm dog can wear Laramie or Abilene as well as an apartment dog can.

Are all of the places real?

The list is meant to hold only real cities, towns and well-known boroughs in their usual English spelling, with no invented places, and no countries or states unless a city shares the name, as Monaco, Djibouti and Chihuahua do. A few are the everyday short form of a longer name, such as Vegas for Las Vegas, Rio for Rio de Janeiro and Cabo for Cabo San Lucas. The list was screened, so look a place up on a map if it matters to you.

Which dog breeds are named after cities in the list?

Several. The Boston Terrier, the Havanese (Havana), the Bolognese (Bologna), the Norwich Terrier and the Weimaraner (Weimar) all take their names from cities you will find here, and the Pekingese is named after Peking, the old English name for Beijing. Chihuahua is in the list too: the breed is named after the Mexican state, whose capital city has the same name.
