Get 500 Chinese nicknames formed the way Mandarin speakers form them, from milk names like Lele and Doudou to Xiao Ting, A Wei, Lao Wang and Baobei. Each entry gives pinyin and simplified characters, and most add a short gloss or the name the nickname comes from.

About this generator

Chinese nicknames follow a handful of recipes. The first is the milk name (xiaoming), the home name parents use for a small child. Most double a single syllable, either a pleasant word, as in Lele, Tiantian and Doudou, or a syllable of the formal name, so that Zihan becomes Hanhan. Older country milk names such as Tiedan, Shitou and Goudan are deliberately plain, from the folk belief that a humble name keeps a child safe.

The second recipe is a prefix. Xiao (little) goes before a syllable of the given name for someone younger, as in Xiao Ting, and A does the same job across southern China, as in A Wei. With a surname the pair is Xiao and Lao (old): a young colleague is Xiao Zhang, a senior one is Lao Zhang, and neither is rude. Da (big) separates two people who share a surname, Da Liu and Xiao Liu. Kinship words serve too: Ge and Jie for an older friend, Laoda and Laoyao for the eldest and youngest child.

The list adds couple and family endearments, friendly descriptive nicknames and food and animal pet names. Every entry is plain pinyin without tone marks, then simplified characters; most add a short gloss or the source name. Two nicknames can share a spelling, so let the characters decide.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the prefix to the relationship. Xiao is for someone younger or junior and Lao for someone older or long known, so a manager can call an intern Xiao Liu, but the intern says Lao Zhang only to a peer and uses a title such as Zhang Zong for the boss.
  • Cut the nickname from the character's own name. A girl called Yuting can be Xiao Ting to classmates, and a man called Zhiwei can be A Wei to old friends. A nickname with no link to the name needs a story behind it.
  • Let different people use different names for one character. A mother who still says the milk name, friends who say A Jie and co-workers who say Xiao Chen tell the reader three relationships at once.
  • Use region as a clue. A forms such as A Fang suit Guangdong, Fujian and Taiwan, while Laotie and names ending in zi, like Qiangzi, sound northern.
  • Copy the characters along with the pinyin. Xiao Yu written 小鱼 is little fish, and other characters with the same spelling mean something else, so check the characters with a fluent reader before you print or engrave a nickname.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Chinese milk name?

A milk name, xiaoming or ruming, is the pet name a family gives a baby and often keeps using for life at home. Doubled syllables are the usual shape, as in Lele, Niuniu and Xuexue, along with pet names like Xiao Bao and Tangyuan. Outside the family it is replaced by the formal name, so being called by it signals closeness.

What do Xiao, A and Lao mean in a nickname?

Xiao means little and marks someone younger or junior, Lao means old and marks someone older or a friend of long standing, and A is a familiar prefix with no meaning of its own that is heard most in the south. Xiao and A attach to a syllable of the given name, as in Xiao Ting and A Wei, while Lao attaches to the surname, as in Lao Wang. None of them is an insult when used between people who know each other.

What do Chinese couples call each other?

Baobei and Qin'ai de are the common sweet ones, and married couples say Laogong for husband and Laopo for wife. Loanwords such as Daling and Hani are used playfully. Couples who have grown old together are each other's Laoban, and a wife may fondly call her husband Lao Touzi.

Why is the pinyin written without tone marks?

The entries follow the format of the other Chinese pages on this site: plain pinyin with the characters beside it. The characters carry the exact word, tones included, which plain pinyin cannot show. If you need to say a nickname aloud, look up the characters in a dictionary to hear the tones.
