Drag Car Name Generator

Drag cars have been named since the first gassers rolled onto dry lake beds, and the conventions are remarkably stable. A good strip name is short enough to letter across a quarter panel, loud enough to read from the grandstands, and says something about the car or its owner: Swamp Rat, Chi-Town Hustler, Blue Max, Jungle Jim, Color Me Gone, Hemi Under Glass. Most fall into a few families: menace (Sudden Impact, Brass Knuckles), alliterative personas that give the car a personality (Hole Shot Hattie, Burnout Betty), shop and racing jargon turned into a joke (Nitro Fixation, Chute Happens, Blown Budget), and the self-aware bracket-car confession (Retirement Plan, Divorce Settlement, Ramen Noodle Racer).

The best names also fit the class. A nitro funny car or top fuel dragster wants something ominous or explosive; a pro mod or door slammer suits swagger and color (Candy Apple Cannon, Plum Crazy Express); a gasser or nostalgia car wants a 1960s flavor with moonshine, hot rod and rockabilly references; and a footbrake bracket car can get away with pure comedy. Painted on the window, stitched on the crew shirts and called out by the track announcer, the name becomes the car's identity.
