Camera Name Generator

People name cameras for three different reasons, and each wants a different kind of name. Photographers nickname the body they carry every day the way drivers name cars: Old Faithful, The Brick, The Boat Anchor for a heavy old SLR, Clicky or Snappy for a compact, and photography puns for anything else (Bokeh Monster, F-Stop Fitzgerald, Croptimus Prime, Lens Armstrong). A backup body becomes Plan B or Understudy; a patched-together vintage rig becomes Frankencam.

Writers, game designers and prop makers need cameras that sound real without being real. Actual camera names follow a recognisable pattern: a short Latin, optical or bird word plus a model code or format (Kestrel 35, Argus Seventy, Obscura Mk II, Helia 6x7, Luxor Rangefinder), with mid-century flourishes like -flex and -matic (Duoflex, Snapmatic) for anything meant to look 1950s. The generator's fictional models use those conventions and avoid existing brands.

The third group is anyone labelling a security camera, doorbell or baby monitor in an app, where names like Driveway Eye, Porch Watch, Garage Sentinel and Nursery Watch beat 'Camera 3' when an alert arrives at 2 a.m. Mascot-style names (Cammy, Pixel Pete, Frankie Flash) round out the list for kids' projects and social accounts.
